Aloysius Viktor Stepinac (Croatian:Alojzije Viktor Stepinac, 8 May 1898 – 10 February 1960) was the CroatianCatholicArchbishop of Zagreb from 1937 until his death in 1960, including the genocidal rule of the Ustaše over the Axispuppet state the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He was tried by the communistYugoslav government after the war and convicted of treason and collaboration with the Ustaše regime. He served his 16-year sentence first in prison, then confined to his home village of Krašić. He was made a cardinal in 1953. In 1998 he was declared a martyr and beatified by Pope John Paul II. His record during World War II and his subsequent martyrdom and beatification remain controversial.
