Allen Young

Sir Allen Young (1827–1915) was an English master mariner and explorer, best remembered for his role in Arctic exploration including the search for Sir John Franklin.

Early life

Allen Young was born at Twickenham on 12 December 1827, and went to sea as a midshipman in the merchant marine in 1842. By 1853 he was master of the Blackwall Frigate Marlborough and made two round voyages between England and Australia. During the Crimean War he was master of the 3000-ton troop ship Adelaide.

The Fox Expedition

In 1857 Allen Young offered himself as sailing master of the auxiliary steamship Fox under the overall command of Francis Leopold McClintock, that was to search the Franklin expedition, missing since 1845. He also donated 500 pounds to the expedition, and Lady Franklin gratefully accepted his services. The expedition went on to find the only written record of the missing expedition's fate, and Young himself undertook several lengthy overland sled journeys in the search.

Allen Young (born June 30, 1941) is an American journalist, author, editor and publisher who is also a social, political and environmental activist.

Early life

Allen Young, born in Liberty, New York, on June 30, 1941, to Rae (Goldfarb) Young and Louis Young. His parents, both secular Jews, spent their youth in New York City, then relocated to the hamlet of Glen Wild (estimated pop. 100) in Fallsburg in the foothills of the Catskills, and started a poultry farm, also providing accommodations for summer tourists in this region known as the Borscht Belt. He was a red diaper baby. He graduated from Fallsburg Central High School and received an undergraduate degree in 1962 from Columbia College, Columbia University. Following a Masters of Arts degree in 1963 from Stanford University in Hispanic American and Luso-Brazilian Studies, he earned a Masters of Science degree in 1964 from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism . After receiving a Fulbright Award in 1964, Young spent three years in Brazil, Chile and other Latin American countries, contributing numerous articles to the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor and other periodicals.
