Allen Jones (artist)

Allen Jones RA (born 1 September 1937) is a British pop artist best known for his paintings, sculptures, and lithography. He was awarded the Prix des Jeunes Artistes at the 1963 Paris Biennale. He is a Senior Academician at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Jones has taught at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, the University of South Florida, the University of California, the Banff Center School of Fine Arts in Canada, and the Berlin University of the Arts. His works reside in a number of collections; including the Tate, the Museum Ludwig, the Warwick Arts Centre and the Hirshhorn Museum. His best known work Hatstand, Table and Chair, involving fibreglass "fetish" mannequins, debuted to protests in 1970.

Early life and education

Jones was born in the English city of Southampton on 1 September 1937. The son of a Welsh factory worker, he was raised in the west London district of Ealing, and in his youth attended Ealing County Grammar School for Boys. Jones had an interest in art from an early age. In 1955, he began studying painting and lithography at Hornsey College of Art in London, where he would graduate in 1959. At the time the teaching method at Hornsey was based on Paul Klee's Pedagogical Sketchbook from the 1930s. While a student at Hornsey, Jones travelled to Paris and the French region of Provence, and was particularly influenced by the art of Robert Delaunay. He also attended a Jackson Pollock show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1958, and according to Jones, "for me it was outside any known frame of reference. The scale, the ambition, the freedom. I felt like suing my teachers for not telling me what was happening in the world." He afterwards travelled to see the Musie Fernand Léger in the French commune of Biot, and in 1959 he left Hornsey to begin attending the Royal College of Art.

William Allan Jones Jr. (born December 31, 1952) is an American businessman from Cleveland, Tennessee. He is the founder, chairman and CEO of Check Into Cash, Creditcorp, Jones Management Services and the founder of the Community Financial Services Association.

Early life and education

Jones was born on December 31, 1952, in Cleveland to William A. (Bill) Jones and Virginia Slaughter Jones. He was the first baby born at the county’s new Bradley Memorial Hospital.

Jones attended Cleveland High School, where he wrestled and won various awards and served as team captain.. He graduated from Cleveland in 1972. Jones credited wrestling with helping build character and said, "In wrestling, I didn't have anyone to rely on but me." He declined wrestling scholarships to pursue a business degree at Middle Tennessee State University.

Business career

Jones left college at age 20 to help his father stabilize the family’s small business, the Credit Bureau of Cleveland. He purchased this reporting and debt collection business in 1977 and developed it to become one of the largest credit bureau databases in the state.

Allen Jones (Continental Congress)

Allen Jones (December 24, 1739 – November 10, 1798) was an American planter and statesman from Northampton County, North Carolina.

Allen Jones was born in Bertie County (later Halifax County), in colonial North Carolina. He attended Eton College in England.

After returning to the colony, he was a member of the colonial assembly between 1773 and 1775 and delegate to the five North Carolina Provincial Congresses (1774-1776), serving as vice-president in the Fourth Provincial Congress. Jones served in the military throughout the American Revolutionary War (1775–81), attaining the rank of brigadier general.

He also served in the State senate 1777 to 1779, 1783, 1784, and 1787; and as a Member of the Continental Congress in 1779 and 1780. Jones was a delegate at the state convention that rejected the proposed Constitution of the United States at Halifax, in 1788.

Allen Jones died on his plantation, Mount Gallant, near Roanoke Rapids, Northampton County, N.C., on November 10, 1798. Interment was in the private burial ground on his estate.
