Ali Abdul Karim

Ali Abdul Karim (Arabic: علي عبد الكريم‎) (born 1953) is a Syrian diplomat. He is the first Syrian ambassador to Lebanon. Before that he served as the ambassador to Kuwait and as the general manager of the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), and official Syrian Television. He holds a B.A. in Arabic Literature from the University of Damascus.

Karim Abdul (born 3 July 1982) is a collegiate basketball player from Cameroon. He is currently playing for the UST Growling Tigers in the UAAP. He is also a football player for Dolphins United F.C. where he plays as goalkeeper.

Rookie season

Abdul joined the Tigers in 2011 as a walk-in applicant. In his rookie season, Abdul averaged 12.0 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists per game, 1.0 steal per game and 1.5 blocks per game. Stepping up in the second round of eliminations together with veterans Jeric Teng, Jeric Fortuna and Chris Camus, Abdul and the Tigers finished the season in 4th place with an 8–6 record and returned to the Final Four. In their Final Four match-up against the Ateneo Blue Eagles, Abdul finished with a double-double 16 points and 16 rebounds with 2 steals and 2 blocks, but his efforts came up short as the Tigers were knocked out by the Blue Eagles to advance to the Finals 66–69.

Second season

In his second season with the Tigers, Abdul went for a career high 24 points with 16 rebounds and 2 steals in a 72–73 loss against the FEU Tamaraws. The Tigers were able to advance to the UAAP Final Four as the No. 2 seed with a 10–4 record in the elimination round, they were able to defeat the NU Bulldogs to advance to the UAAP Finals and faced off against the Ateneo Blue Eagles but were swept in the Finals 2–0 as the Blue Eagles completed their five-peat. Abdul finished the season averaging 15.8 points per game, a league-leading 11.6 rebounds per game, 1.8 assists per game, a league-leading 1.5 steals per game (tied with Ray Ray Parks) and 1.7 blocks per game which is third in the UAAP on 45% field goal shooting and 60% free throw shooting. Abdul was named as a member of the Mythical Five for that season and finished second in the race for the season's Most Valuable Player award behind Ray Ray Parks.

Afghan detainees at Guantanamo Bay

According to the United States Department of Defense, it held more than two hundred Afghan detainees in Guantanamo prior to May 15, 2006. They had been captured and classified as enemy combatants in warfare following the US and allies invasion of Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban and disrupt terrorist networks. Originally the US held such prisoners in sites in Afghanistan, but needed a facility to detain them where they could be interrogated. It opened the Guantanamo Bay detention camp on January 11, 2002 and transported the enemy combatants there.

The United States Supreme Court's ruled in Rasul v. Bush (2004) that the detainees had the right of habeas corpus to challenge their detention under the US Constitution. That summer, the Department of Defense stopped transferring detained men to Guantanamo. On September 6, 2006 United States President George W. Bush announced the transfer of 14 high value detainees to Guantanamo, including several Afghans. Other Afghans have been transferred to the camp since then.

Abdul Karim (canoeist)

Abdul Karim (born May 10, 1967) is an Indonesian sprint canoer who competed in the early 1990s. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, he was eliminated in the repechages of both the K-2 500 m and the K-2 1000 m events.

Ali (singer)

Cho Yong-Jin (Korean: 조용진), famously known as Ali (stylized as ALi), is a South Korean singer-songwriter famous for her work on Korean pop music in the early twenty-first century. Her stage name is a motif from Muhammad Ali. This is so that it can be engraved easily by the masses. Following her debut in 2009, she is primarily known for her strong vocals and her time as a contestant on the KBS program Immortal Songs 2.

Career

Following her debut in 2009, she had already gained fame for her appearances on music shows, most notably Immortal Songs 2 on KBS2. She also worked as a professor in applied musical arts at the Seoul Technical Arts College.

ALi released her first album SOULri in December 2011 which was strangely two years after her official debut. One released track, "Na Young", garnered immediate controversy as its lyrics referenced a case of sexual assault that had been a very public case in South Korea, with many detractors criticizing the song to be insensitive to its subject. ALi would later address this controversy by revealing that she herself was a survivor of sexual assault.
