Alfred T. Andreas

Alfred Theodore Andreas (May 29, 1839 – February 10, 1900) was an American book publisher and historian.

Life

He was born in Amity, Orange County, New York, on May 29, 1839.

After acquiring an education, he moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where he taught school for some years and conducted business. In 1860, he moved to Illinois. He enlisted in Company G, 12th Illinois Infantry and served through the American Civil War, rising through the ranks to become a division commissary, serving with Sherman on the March to the Sea and the Carolina campaigns. After peace was restored, he moved to Davenport, Iowa, married and for several years was engaged in compiling and publishing county and State atlases, in partnership with John Milton Lyter, who became mayor in 1870. In 1875 he completed and published his greatest work, which was an "Illustrated Historical Atlas of Iowa." It was accurate and became an official authority for real estate dealers, county and State officers. Although many made him substantial profit, others, including his Minnesota and Indiana atlases, were financial failures. Later Andreas moved to Chicago and organized the “Western Historical Company,” and took up historical writing, publishing a three-volume History of Chicago. He died at New Rochelle, New York, on February 10, 1900.

Andreas is a parish in the Sheading of Ayre lying in the north of the Isle of Man. It is one of three parishes along with Bride and Lezayre in the sheading of Ayre. The small parish of Bride is located to the North-East at around 2.5 miles from the parish's centres with the parish of Jurby being found to the West around 2.6 miles away.

Geography

The parish stretches from Lhen Moar, 4 miles (6.4 km) along the north-western coast to Bride. It is north of Lezayre, east of the parish of Jurby and borders on the Irish Sea to the north from where the Scottish Southern Uplands and the Mull of Galloway can sometimes clearly be seen. The total area is about 15 square miles (39 km²).

The Isle of Man census 2006 lists the parish population as 1,381, increased from the population of 1,152 in 2001.

The village of Andreas or Kirk Andreas is in the parish.

Andreas Airfield

The northeast corner of Andreas is home to the former RAF Andreas airfield. It is home to a small number of privately owned light aircraft and also used by a gliding club.

Andreas (physician)

Andreas (Ancient Greek: Ἀνδρέας) was the name of several physicians in ancient Greece, whom it is difficult to distinguish from each other.

Andreas Comes, quoted several times by Aëtius of Amida was certainly the latest of all, whose title "Comes" here meant "Comes archiatrorum". He probably lived shortly before Aetius himself (that is, in the fourth or fifth century AD), as this title was only introduced under the Roman emperors.

If, for want of any positive data, all the other passages where the name Andreas occurs are supposed to refer to the same person (which may be the case), he was a native of Carystus in Euboea, the son of a man named Chrysar or Chrysaor (ὁ τοῦ Χρύσαρος or Χρυσάορος), if the name is not corrupt, and one of the followers of Herophilos.

The earliest known Andreas was physician to Ptolemy IV Philopator, and was killed while in attendance on that prince, shortly before the Battle of Raphia (217 BCE), by Theodotus of Aetolia, who had secretly entered the tent with the intent to murder the king. He wrote several medical works, of which nothing remains but the titles, and a few extracts preserved by different ancient authors. He wa probably the first person who wrote a treatise on rabies, which he called Κυνόλυσσος (Kunolyssos). In one of his works On Medical Genealogy, he is said by Soranus, in his life of Hippocrates, to have given a false and scandalous account of that great physician, saying that he had been obliged to leave his native country on account of his having set fire to the library at Cnidos; a story which, though universally considered to be totally unfounded, was repeated with some variations by Varro and John Tzetzes, and was much embellished in the middle ages.

Alfred (Dvořák)

Alfred is a heroic opera in three acts by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. It was Dvořák's first opera and the only one he composed to a German text. The libretto, by Karl Theodor Korner, had already been set by Friedrich von Flotow (as Alfred der Große) and is based on the story of the English king Alfred the Great. Composed in 1870, Alfred was never performed during Dvořák's lifetime. It received its premiere (in Czech translation) at the City Theatre, Olomouc on 10 December 1938.

The opera was performed for the first time with its original German libretto on 17 September 2014, in Prague.
