Alfred Rowe

Alfred William Rowe (1 July 1837 – 12 March 1921) was an English clergyman and educationalist by career, and also a cricketer who played first-class cricket in two matches in the 1859 season. He was born in Cambridge and died at Mapperley, Nottingham.

Rowe was educated at Lancing College and at Uppingham School and then at Trinity College, Cambridge. As a cricketer, his batting and bowling styles are not known, but from his record in Cambridge University Cricket Club trial matches in 1858 and 1859, the university side appears to have regarded him primarily as a bowler. Nevertheless, it was a batsman, playing for the Cambridge Town Club against the university that he made impact in his first first-class game, scoring 45, the highest score of a rain-affected game: he also took wickets and made a catch. That led to his selection for the university team in the next game, a match against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), in which he batted at No 8 and scored 1 and 16, taking a single wicket. Though there were other non-first-class matches over the next few weeks for Cambridge University, he did not play first-class cricket again.

Rowe, Massachusetts

Rowe is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 393 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Rowe was the site of fishing and foraging for local Native American tribes. The area was first visited by white settlers in 1744, and was the site of a fort to guard against raids. In 1762, the town lands were purchased by the Rev. Cornelius Jones, who named it "Myrifield" after the Greek word for "thousand". The town had enough settlers by 1785 to have it incorporated as a town, renamed by the Massachusetts General Court after John Rowe, a prominent Boston merchant.

The town of Rowe grew around mills on the river, but also had other industries, including sulfur, talc and soapstone mining. This was nowhere more evident than in the now abandoned settlement at the Davis Mine. In the late 1880s, with the addition of the railroad along the river, the area had become somewhat of a small resort town. But, by the advent of the 1900s, most industry had begun to dry up, leaving the town fairly rural until the 1950s. At that point, with the "baby boom" underway, Rowe became the site of Yankee Rowe Nuclear Power Station, the first nuclear power plant in New England, near the Sherman Dam along the Vermont border. The plant was in operation from 1960 to 1992, and the plant is now completely decommissioned, with the nuclear waste set to be transported to Yucca Mountain's containment facilities upon their completion in 2020.

ROWE - Results Only Work Environment is a human resource management strategy co-created by Jody Thompson and Cali Ressler wherein employees are paid for results (output) rather than the number of hours worked. Cali and Jody , who originally proposed the strategy at Best Buy, have since started a consulting group called CultureRx. The strategy has subsequently been implemented at a second large American retailer, Gap., as well as the Girl Scouts of San Gorgino, J.A. Counter and Associates, the Fairview Health Services I.T. Department. ROWE tries to give managers the tools to define goals which can be clearly met or unmet by the results of individual contributors working for that manager. The increase in popularity of ROWE strategy can be seen in the number of companies implementing it. Recently, companies and agencies like GAP Inc., Yum! Brands, SpinWeb, Dixie iron Works, Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council, Minnesota Department of Transportation and American Society of Clinical Oncology have been experimenting with ROWE. Additionly, Sweden has recently brought up the 6-hour a day work strategy in hope of increasing employee productivity. Experts suggest that this is a great step towards ROWE and also helps curb the consequences of Presenteeism. Best Buy, once the biggest advocate of ROWE, has abandoned it. Its CEO Hubert Joly said "Depending on the skill and will of the individual, the right leadership style may be coaching, motivating or directing rather than delegating". ROWE is all about delegating to the employee and hoping that she will deliver. As Hubert Joly said "If you delegate to me the job of building a brick wall, you will be disappointed in the result!".

Alfred (Dvořák)

Alfred is a heroic opera in three acts by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. It was Dvořák's first opera and the only one he composed to a German text. The libretto, by Karl Theodor Korner, had already been set by Friedrich von Flotow (as Alfred der Große) and is based on the story of the English king Alfred the Great. Composed in 1870, Alfred was never performed during Dvořák's lifetime. It received its premiere (in Czech translation) at the City Theatre, Olomouc on 10 December 1938.

The opera was performed for the first time with its original German libretto on 17 September 2014, in Prague.
