Alfred Potter

Alfred Potter (15 December 1827 – 21 September 1878) was an English clergyman and a cricketer who played first-class cricket for Cambridge University in 1849. He was born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire and died at Nottingham.

Potter was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. As a cricketer, he was a tail-end batsman and a bowler; his batting and bowling styles are not known. Playing for Cambridge against the Marylebone Cricket Club, he took five wickets in the MCC second innings, though the complete figures are not recorded. That led to his selection for the 1849 University Match against Oxford University, which Cambridge won narrowly and in which he took two wickets. That was his final game of first-class cricket.

Potter graduated from Cambridge University in 1850 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was ordained as a priest in the Church of England and served as a curate at Mablethorpe, Skirbeck and Ropsley, all in Lincolnshire. From 1860 to his death in 1878 he was rector of Keyworth, Nottinghamshire and from 1876 he combined that post with being rector of Stanton-on-the-Wolds as well.

Potter (TV series)

Potter was a 1979 BBC sitcom written by Roy Clarke. Running for three series, it originally starred Arthur Lowe as Redvers Potter, a busybody former sweet manufacturer ("Pottermints - the hotter mints") with time on his hands following retirement. Set in suburban South London, the series followed Potter in his various attempts to keep himself occupied by interfering in other people's business.

The series co-starred Noel Dyson as his wife Aileen, John Barron as the Vicar and John Warner as "Tolly" Tolliver, his next-door neighbour. Characters in later series included Harry H. Corbett as the comic ex-gangster Harry Tooms and Brenda Cowling as Jane.

The first series comprised 6 episodes, and aired in March–April, 1979. The second series comprised 7 episodes, and aired the following year, from February–April, 1980.

Plans for a third series were already underway when Lowe died (in April 1982), so Lowe was replaced by Robin Bailey in the 7-episode third series, which aired the following year between July–August 1983, after which the series was discontinued.

Alfred (Dvořák)

Alfred is a heroic opera in three acts by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. It was Dvořák's first opera and the only one he composed to a German text. The libretto, by Karl Theodor Korner, had already been set by Friedrich von Flotow (as Alfred der Große) and is based on the story of the English king Alfred the Great. Composed in 1870, Alfred was never performed during Dvořák's lifetime. It received its premiere (in Czech translation) at the City Theatre, Olomouc on 10 December 1938.

The opera was performed for the first time with its original German libretto on 17 September 2014, in Prague.
