Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas (French: [a.lɛk.sɑ̃dʁ dy.ma], born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie [dy.ma da.vi də la pa.jə.tʁi]; 24 July 1802 – 5 December 1870), also known as Alexandre Dumas, père, was a French writer. His works have been translated into nearly 100 languages, and he is one of the most widely read French authors. Many of his historical novels of high adventure were originally published as serials, including The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. His novels have been adapted since the early twentieth century for nearly 200 films. Dumas' last novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine, unfinished at his death, was completed by a scholar and published in 2005, becoming a bestseller. It was published in English in 2008 as The Last Cavalier.

Prolific in several genres, Dumas began his career by writing plays, which were successfully produced from the first. He also wrote numerous magazine articles and travel books; his published works totaled 100,000 pages. In the 1840s, Dumas founded the Théâtre Historique in Paris.

Thomas-Alexandre Dumas

Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie (French: [tɔma alɛksɑ̃dʁ dyma davi də la pajətʁi]; also known as Alexandre Dumas; 25 March 1762 – 26 February 1806) was a general in Revolutionary France and the highest-ranking man of African descent ever in a European army. He was the first person of color in the French military to become brigadier general, the first to become divisional general, and the first to become general-in-chief of a French army. Dumas shared the status of the highest-ranking officer of Sub-Saharan origin in the Western world only with Toussaint Louverture (who in May 1797 became the second general-in-chief of Sub-Saharan origin in the French military) until 1975, when the American Daniel "Chappie" James Jr became a four-star general in the United States Air Force, the closest American equivalent of Général d'Armée, Dumas's highest rank.

Born in Saint-Domingue, Thomas-Alexandre was of mixed race, the son of a white French nobleman and an enslaved mother of African descent. He was born into slavery because of his mother's status but was also born into nobility because of his father's. His father took the boy with him to France in 1776 and had him educated. Slavery had been illegal in metropolitan France since 1315 and thus any slave would be freed de facto by being in the country. His father helped Thomas-Alexandre enter the French military.

Alexandre Dumas (merchant)

Alexandre Dumas (c. 1726 – July 11, 1802) was a lawyer, notary, businessman and political figure in Lower Canada.

A Huguenot, Dumas was born in Nègrepelisse, France around 1726 and came to New France in 1751 with a cousin Jean Dumas Saint-Martin as representatives of a French merchant. He was involved with the fisheries in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and was also involved in retail trade. With a partner, he operated a grist mill on the Saint-Charles River. He renounced his faith in 1760 to marry a Roman Catholic, Josephte Laroche, widow of Jean Requiem, a ship's captain. In 1767, with others, he obtained a lease on the seigneury of Saint-Maurice and the Saint-Maurice ironworks. Dumas served as a captain in the militia and helped defend the town of Quebec against the Americans in 1775; he remained active in the militia becoming lieutenant-colonel by 1802. In 1776, he married Marie-Françoise Fornel, the daughter of Louis Fornel and the widow of Antoine-Florent Meignot. In 1778, Dumas became sole lessee of the ironworks, holding it until 1783, when the lease was taken over by Conrad Gugy. Dumas qualified to practice as a notary in 1784; he qualified to practice as a lawyer the following year. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Dorchester County in 1796.

Alexandre Dumas (Paris Métro)

Alexandre Dumas is a station on Paris Métro Line 2, on the border of the 11th and 20th arrondissements.

The station was opened on 31 January 1903 as part of the extension of line 2 (known at the time as "2 Nord") from Anvers. It was the eastern terminus of the line until 2 April 1903 when it was extended to Nation. The station was originally called Bagnolet after the Rue de Bagnolet, the road to Bagnolet. On 13 September 1970, it was renamed after the French author Alexandre Dumas and the Rue Alexandre Dumas. It was the location of the Barrière de Fontarabie, a gate built for the collection of taxation as part of the Wall of the Farmers-General; the gate was built between 1784 and 1788 and demolished during the nineteenth century.
