Alexander Valley AVA

The Alexander Valley (Wappo: Unutsawaholmanoma, "Toyon Bush Berry Place") is a Californian American Viticultural Area (AVA) just north of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. It is home to many wineries and vineyards, as well as the city of Cloverdale. It is the largest and most fully planted wine region in Sonoma.Highway 101 runs through the valley, and the Russian River flows down the valley, surrounded by vineyards on both sides. From the higher elevations of the valley rim, there is view as far south as Taylor Mountain and Sonoma Mountain. The region was named for Cyrus Alexander, owner of a part of the Rancho Sotoyome Mexican land grant, in 1847. Granted AVA status in 1984, the boundaries of the appellation are defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 27, Section 9.53.

Alexander Valley (Antarctica)

Alexander Valley (77°17′08″S 161°23′36″E / 77.28556°S 161.39333°E / -77.28556; 161.39333Coordinates: 77°17′08″S 161°23′36″E / 77.28556°S 161.39333°E / -77.28556; 161.39333) is a valley, 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km) long, between Mount Leland and Sponsors Peak in the Cruzen Range of Victoria Land. The lower end of the valley is ice free and opens to Victoria Upper Glacier; the upper portion is partly ice covered and is surmounted by Mount Isaac, 1,250 metres (4,100 ft). It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 2005 after Stephen Paul Alexander, a United States Antarctic Program marine biologist studying McMurdo Sound benthic foraminifer for six seasons between 1985 and 2001; laboratory manager, Crary Science and Engineering Center, McMurdo Station for three seasons (2002-2004).
