Alexander Hall

Alexander Hall (January 11, 1894, Boston, Massachusetts – July 30, 1968, San Francisco, California) was an American film director and theatre actor.

Biography

Hall acted in the theatre from the age of four through 1914, when he began to work in silent movies. Following his military service in World War I, he returned to Hollywood and pursued a career in film production. He worked as a film editor and assistant director at Paramount Pictures until 1932, when he directed his first feature film, Sinners in the Sun. From 1937 to 1947, he was a contract director at Columbia Pictures, where he earned a reputation for sophisticated comedies. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941).

From 1934 to 1936, Hall was married to actress Lola Lane. He was engaged briefly to Lucille Ball, who left him when she met Desi Arnaz. The couple later hired him to direct their 1956 film Forever, Darling.

Hall died of complications from a stroke in San Francisco.

Alexander Hall (soccer)

Alexander Noble Hall (3 December 1880 – September 25, 1943) was a Scottish amateur football (soccer) player who competed for Canada in the 1904 Summer Olympics. He then had a professional football (soccer) career in Scotland and England.

Hall was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and brought up in Peterhead. In 1904 he was a member of the Galt F.C. team, which won the gold medal in the football tournament. He played all two matches as a forward and scored three goals in the first. He died in Toronto on 25 September 1943 and is buried in the city's Prospect Cemetery.

Alexander Hall (Princeton University)

Alexander Hall is a 900-seatRichardsonian Romanesque assembly hall at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. It is home to both the Princeton University Orchestra and the Princeton Symphony Orchestra.

The name honors three generations of members of the Alexander family who served as trustees to the University. Mrs. Harriet Crocker Alexander donated the money for such a building to be named in honor of her relatives: her husband Charles B. Alexander (class of 1870), his father Henry M. Alexander (class of 1840), a college trustee and member of the Committee on Commencement Arrangements, and his grandfather Reverend Dr. Archibald Alexander (founder of the Princeton Theological Seminary and its first professor, honorary Princeton doctorate 1810) It was built to accommodate large meetings and commencement for students and faculty. Over time, the Hall became available to the public and now holds town meetings as well as visiting concert groups. Many vocal and performing groups seek this auditorium because the acoustics inside the rusticated brownstone and red granite walls and turrets rival Carnegie Hall.
