Alan Hale, Jr.

Alan Hale, Jr. (March 8, 1921 – January 2, 1990) was an American film, stage, character and television actor and a restaurant owner, who was the son of character actor Alan Hale, Sr., whose career spans four decades of television. He also appeared on several talk and variety shows.

Appearing in over 200 films and television roles, Hale's long acting career began in films in 1941, appearing primarily in Westerns, playing opposite Kirk Douglas in The Big Trees (1952), Audie Murphy in Destry (1954), Ray Milland in A Man Alone (1955), Robert Wagner in The True Story of Jesse James (1957) and Hugh Marlowe in The Long Rope (1961). He has also appeared in musical comedies, playing opposite Don DeFore in It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947), James Cagney in The West Point Story (1950) and Judy Canova in Honeychile (1951). He achieved continuing success in the CBS television sitcom Gilligan's Island (1964–1967), playing the secondary lead role of The Skipper. After its cancellation, the series would remain a popular staple in syndication. Hale reprised the role of The Skipper in three Gilligan's Island television films and two spin-off cartoon series.

Red Barber was the Dodgers original broadcaster, calling Brooklyn Dodgers games on the radio (and later TV) from 1939-1953.

Vin Scully has called Dodgers games since 1950. His longtime partners were Jerry Doggett (1956–1987) and Ross Porter (1977–2004). In 1976, he was selected by Dodgers fans as the Most Memorable Personality (on the field or off) in the team's history. He is also a recipient of the Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasters (inducted in 1982). He currently is in his 65th year with the team. Unlike the modern style in which multiple sportscasters have an on-air conversation (usually with one functioning as play-by-play announcer and the other(s) as color commentator), Scully, Doggett and Porter generally called games solo, trading with each other inning-by-inning. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Scully would call the radio broadcast except for the 3rd and 7th inning; allowing the other Dodger commentators to broadcast an inning. In the later 90s, Scully would call the first three innings and the last three on television and the middle three on the radio, switching off with his partners.

Alan Hale, Sr. (February 10, 1892 – January 22, 1950) was an American movie actor and director, most widely remembered for his many supporting character roles, in particular as frequent sidekick of Errol Flynn, as well as movies supporting Lon Chaney, Wallace Beery, Douglas Fairbanks, James Cagney, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Ronald Reagan, among dozens of others.

Career

Hale was born Rufus Edward Mackahan in Washington, D.C.. He studied to be an opera singer and also had successes as an inventor. Among his innovations were a sliding theater chair (to allow spectators to slide back to admit newcomers rather than having to stand up), the hand fire extinguisher, and greaseless potato chips.

His first film role was in the 1911 silent movie The Cowboy and the Lady. He played "Little John" in the 1922 film Robin Hood, with Douglas Fairbanks and Wallace Beery, reprised the role 16 years later in The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone, then played him yet again in Rogues of Sherwood Forest in 1950 with John Derek as Robin Hood's son, a 28-year span of portrayals of the same character.
