Al Rayyan

Al-Rayyan (Arabic: الريان‎) is the largest municipality in the state of Qatar. Al Rayyan means 'the source of irrigation' and as per Islam it also means 'a door in heaven' or 'one of the Gates of Paradise'. Its largest settlement is the town of the same name.

History

Al Rayyan Municipality was created as an independent municipal administration, under the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning by virtue of law No.19/1972 issued in 1979, stating, in its first article, the creation of municipalities in Qatar under the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. In its second article, the law stated that each of these municipalities shall have a council headed by one person and comprising at least four members nominated by decree.

Al Rayyan Beirut

Al Rayyan is a Lebanese football club which plays in the second-division in Lebanon. It was relegated in 2007-08 season from the Lebanese Premier League by reaching 11th place.

Al-Rayan Sports Club (Arabic: نادي الريان الرياضي‎) is a Qatari professional sports club fielding teams in a number of sports such as football, futsal, basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics, table tennis and swimming. It is based at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Omm Alafai in the city of Al-Rayyan. The club was founded in 1967 after merging the old Rayyan team with Nusoor Club. The official team colours are red and black. The team is nicknamed is 'The Lions' and also 'Al-Raheeb' which means the The Fierce.

They have won numerous titles in all sports, including two Asian championships in basketball, the Arab championship in handball, futsal domestic titles, table tennis and volleyball, as well as the GCC basketball championship. Both the basketball and handball teams have qualified for the world championships. However, the football team gets the most attention from the club officials as well as the media and the fans.

History

1967–1973: Founding

Al Rayyan's history goes back to the mid-sixties when it was known as Old Al Rayyan. Old Al Rayyan, though an amateur football team, competed in matches arranged throughout the whole country, not being limited to the city in which it was based. Their headquarters was based in a two-bedroom house and they played their matches on a football field in a school based in the New Rayyan area. The club relied on donations from the fans during this period.
