Albert "Al" Greene (born April 13, 1946), often known as The Reverend Al Green, is an American singer best known for recording a series of soul hit singles in the early 1970s, including "Take Me to the River", "Tired of Being Alone", "I'm Still in Love with You", "Love and Happiness" and his signature song, "Let's Stay Together".Inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, Green was referred to on the museum's site as being "one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music". He has also been referred to as "The Last of the Great Soul Singers". Green was included in the Rolling Stone list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, ranking at No. 66.
Life and career
Early life
Al Green was born Albert Greene on April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas. The sixth of ten children born to Cora Lee and Robert G. Greene, Jr., a sharecropper, Al began performing with his brothers in a group called the Greene Brothers around the age of ten. The Greene family relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the late 1950s. Al was kicked out of the family home in his teens after his religiously devout father caught him listening to Jackie Wilson.
Al Green (wrestler)
Alfred Dobalo (October 15, 1955 – June 14, 2013), best known by his ring name Al Green, was an American professional wrestler who performed in North America, Europe, and Japan under a variety of gimmicks, including Rage one half of the team The Wrecking Crew with Fury (Marc Laurinaitis), Blade one half of the Master Blasters with Steel (Kevin Nash) and the Dog in World Championship Wrestling at the turn of the millennium.
Career
Green was trained for a professional wrestling career by Steve Keirn, making his debut in 1990 as "Blade", one half of "The Master Blasters" tag team alongside Kevin Nash.
The Master Blasters
On September 22nd, 1991 Blade was a replacement for "Iron", who left World Championship Wrestling after only one match. The reconstituted Master Blasters continued their undefeated streak in October. Meanwhile Kevin Nash would have his first singles match on September 28, defeating Tom Zenk in Baltimore, MD. At Halloween Havoc on October 27, 1990 in Chicago, IL the Blasters upended The Southern Boys and began to move up the WCW tag-team ratings. However their winning streak would finally come to an end on November 22 at the Omni in Atlanta, GA when Tom Zenk & Brian Pillman handed them their first defeat (Pillman pinning Blade). They rebounded to go on another undefeated streak, defeating The Southern Boys as well as Alan Iron Eagle & Tim Horner and earning a US Tag-Team title shot against the champions The Steiner Brothers. The Steiners however were victorious in matches on December 25 (Atlanta, GA and December 26th (Nashville, TN).
Al Green (basketball)
Al Green (born 1955-1956) is a retired American-Australian professional basketball player who played his career in the Australian National Basketball League from 1981 until his retirement in at the end of 1993. Green obtained Australian citizenship in 1984.
School/College career
Born and bred in the South Bronx in what he calls "the real ghetto", Al Green and grew up playing basketball with future NBA All-Star player Bernard King. He attended Maine Central HS following which he attended Arizona Western Junior College. He then switched schools and went to North Carolina State University where he was a member of the NC State Wolfpack before again moving one last time to Louisiana State University to play for the LSU Tigers. During his college career for NC State and LSU Green would come up against the likes of future NBA Hall of Fame player Magic Johnson.
Green entered into the 1979 NBA Draft where he was a third round selection (64th overall) by the Phoenix Suns, though he would never play in the NBA. In the draft, Green was selected before future NBA All Star center's - 6'11" (211 cm) Bill Laimbeer (65th - Cleveland Cavaliers), 7'2" (218 cm) James Donaldson (73rd - Seattle SuperSonics), and 7'4" (224 cm) Mark Eaton (107th - Phoenix).
Al Green (politician)
Al Green (born September 1, 1947) is the U.S. Representative from Texas' 9th congressional district, serving since 2005. The district includes most of southwestern Houston, including most of that city's share of Fort Bend County. It also includes most of Missouri City.
Early life and career
Green was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Florida A&M University and transferred to Tuskegee University. He later went on to receive his Juris Doctor in 1974 from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. After receiving his law degree and being admitted to the Texas Bar, he remained in Houston and currently lives in the Alief community.
In 1978, Green was elected Justice of the Peace in Harris County, Texas, in the Precinct 7, Place Two position. He held this position for 26 years.
A former trial lawyer, Green co-founded the firm of Green, Wilson, Dewberry, and Fitch. He also served as president of the Houston NAACP and, during his term as the organization's leader, membership increased sevenfold. While serving as NAACP leader, he focused on increasing minority hiring in Texas and forming alliances with Hispanic groups.
