Al-Alam

Al-Alam (The Flag in English) is an arabophone Moroccan daily newspaper.

History and profile

Al Alam was founded in September 1946. The paper, based in Rabat, is the organ of the nationalist Istiqlal party. The party also publishes L'Opinion.

During the mid-1970s the paper was frequently banned by the Moroccan authorities together with its sister publication, L'Opinon, and Al Muharrir, another oppositional paper.

The 2001 circulation of Al Alam was 100,000 copies, making it the second largest daily in the country. It was 18,000 copies in 2003.

Al-Alam was a Syrian Arabic daily newspaper founded in 1944 and published in Syria. It continued to influence public opinion for over two decades.

History

Al-Alam newspaper was founded by the Syrian writer and journalist, Izzat Husrieh who was the editor-in-chief of Al Istiklal Al Arabi newspaper (Arab Independence in English) previously. Later on, the newspaper was edited by Fouad El-Shaeib accompanied by Adnan Molouhi as its editor's secretary. Al-Alam was one of the newspapers which did not stop upon the coupe of president Husni Al-Zaim in 1949, and continued until 1953 when it was merged with Al Qabas (The Firebrand) as Al-Zaman (The Time) when president Adib Shishakli ordered every two newspapers to merge. After that, it was separated again when the legislations changed. Later on, the newspaper was voluntarily merged again with Al Qabas, but was soon separated again. Al-Alam also continued to be published during the years of the United Arab Republic (UAR).

Al-Alam News Network

Al-Alam is an Arabic news channel broadcasting from Iran and is owned by the state-owned media corporation Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

The network's political coverage tends to be the most popular; however, other subjects, such as commentaries, analysis, business and sports also get a share of the audience. Programs are broadcast for over 300 million Arabic-speaking people around the world, with large audiences in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean regions. The satellite channel can be received in five continents.

Al-Alam has news bureaus in Tehran, Beirut and Baghdad. Unlike many other channels, Al-Alam can be viewed in Iraq without the use of a satellite receiver, as it is able to use a terrestrial transmitter close to the Iran-Iraq border.

An English language website, known as Alalam News, was launched on August 15, 2006, claiming to disseminate news in an impartial moderate manner.

Alalam News Network launched its Persian Website in April 2007 in order to cover news exclusively in the Persian language.
