Ajman

Ajman (Arabic: عجمان‎ 'Aǧmān) is the capital of the emirate of Ajman in the United Arab Emirates, located along the Persian Gulf.

Population

The city has a population of 238,000 (2010 estimate) This represents more than 90% of the population of the emirate. The urban area runs directly into the city of Sharjah along the coast to the south west, which in turn is adjacent to Dubai, forming a continuous urban area.

Commercial

Ajman is home to the Ruler's office, companies, commercial markets, and about 50 international and local retail shops. Banking interests include: Emirates National Bank of Dubai, Ajman Bank, Arab Bank PLC, Bank Saderat Iran, and Commercial Bank of Dubai. Ajman is also home to fishing industry & Seafood Importers/Exporters in UAE.

Tourism

Ajman is continuing the development stalled by the 2007-8 economic crisis and once again undergoing a period of growth. Tourist attractions in the emirate, including hotels, shopping and cultural destinations are growing rapidly. Tourist attractions include the Ajman National Museum situated at Ajman Fort, the Red Fort and the museum in the inland enclave of Manama.

Ajman (tribe)

Al-'Ajman or al-'Ijman (Arabic: العجمان‎, singular "Ajmi") is a tribal confederation in northeastern Arabia, with members spread across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, U.A.E. and the Kuwait.

Etymology

The word "Ajman" literally translates to the "Persians". There is little to suggest that Ajman shares homogenous Qahtanite origins with Al-Murrah and Yam. The general consensus amongst scholars is that they are the descendants of Persian soldiers who intermarried and allied with the arab women of Yam and its sub-tribes, later joining the tribal confederation. Whether or not they descend from a single forefather or that they are from different ancestries is disputed amongst scholars. Some have alleged that they are descended from a Persian man named Faqeer Khorasani from Khurasan who migrated to northeastern Arabia, some link them to the remnants of the imperial Persian soldiers in Yemen who tried retaking that country from the Ethiopian empire, and others believe that they are the descendants of the Persian prisoners of war that emperor Yazegerd III placed in Al-Ahsa. The Solluba (Arabic: صليب, i.e., belonging to Huteimi tribes of unattested and generally obscure origins) are said to have joined this tribal confederation as well, most of whom which belong to the Al-Sulaiman clan.

Emirate of Ajman

The Emirate of Ajman (Arabic: إمارة عجمانّ‎ Imārat al-ʿAǧmān) is one of the seven states constituting the United Arab Emirates. With an area of just 260 square kilometres (100 sq mi), Ajman is the smallest of the emirates by area. Its seat of government is the city of Ajman, after which it is named. The emirate is bordered on its north, south, and east by the Emirate of Sharjah. It has a population of some 240,000.

Located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Ajman also controls two small inland exclaves: Manama and Masfut, both of which are primarily agricultural. Approximately 95% of the population of the emirate resides in the city of Ajman, which forms part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. Ajman is ruled by Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi of the Al Nuaimi tribe. The Crown Prince of the Emirate is Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi.

Etymology

While there is a known Ajami tribe extant in modern Saudi Arabia, the name of the city and Emirate of Ajman could also come from the Arabic 'Ajm', or 'Persians' or alternatively a diminutive of Oman 'Ayman'.
