ARY Digital

ARY Digital, a subsidiary of the ARY Group, is a popular Pakistani television network available in Pakistan, the Middle East, North America and Europe. The ARY Group of companies is a Dubai-based holding company founded by a Pakistani businessman, Abdul Razzak Yaqoob (ARY). The network caters to the needs of South Asians, particularly the Pakistani diaspora. The channel is considered to be a pioneer in Pakistani media and broadcasting industry, and has an expanding network of channels, each with an independent focus.

History

ARY Digital, formerly known as the Pakistani Channel, was launched in the United Kingdom in December 2000 to cater to the growing demands of South Asian entertainment in the region . It uses Samacom, a monopolising uplink provider based in the UAE, as the uplink teleport station.

The channel started off with a format more closely resembling that of PTV Prime and other South Asian channels where it provided slots for soaps in general while presenting an hourly slot for news headlines. Although, flaming political talk shows and dramas were the main priority when it came to programming, the network soon was hailed for its news coverage.

Serial (podcast)

Serial is a podcast produced by Sarah Koenig, first released in October 2014 as a spin-off of the radio program This American Life. Using investigative journalism, Koenig narrates a nonfiction story over multiple episodes. Episodes vary in length. New episodes were originally available weekly, but partway through the second season the schedule was revised to every other week. Serial ranked number one on iTunes even before its debut and remained there for several weeks.Serial won a Peabody Award in April 2015 for its innovative telling of a long-form nonfiction story.

The series was co-created and is co-produced by Koenig and Julie Snyder, both producers of This American Life.

Serial has been confirmed for two more seasons. The first episode of season two of Serial was released December 10, 2015, and season three will be released in the spring of 2016.

Series overview

Koenig has said that Serial is "about the basics: love and death and justice and truth. All these big, big things." She also has noted, "this is not an original idea. Maybe in podcast form it is, and trying to do it as a documentary story is really, really hard. But trying to do it as a serial, this is as old as Dickens." Episodes are released on Thursdays.

Serial film

A movie serial, film serial or chapter play, was a short subject originally shown in movie theaters in conjunction with a feature film, and derived from pulp magazine serialized fiction. Also known as "chapter plays," they were extended motion pictures broken into a number of segments or parts.

Each chapter was screened at a movie theater for one week, and ended with a cliffhanger, in which characters found themselves in perilous situations with little apparent chance of escape. Viewers had to return each week to see the cliffhangers resolved and to follow the continuing story. Movie serials were especially popular with children, and for many youths in the first half of the 20th century a typical Saturday at the movies included at least one chapter of a serial, along with animated cartoons, newsreels, and two feature films.

Popularity and decline

Many serials were Westerns, since those were the least expensive to film. Besides Westerns, though, there were films covering many genres, including crime fiction, espionage, comic book or comic strip characters, science fiction, and jungle adventures. Although most serials were filmed economically, some were made at significant expense. The Flash Gordon serial and its sequels, for instance, were major productions in their times.

Aitraaz

Aitraaz (Objection) is a 2004 Indian Hindi romantic thriller film produced by Subhash Ghai for Mukta Arts and directed by Abbas-Mustan. It tells the story of a man accused of sexual harassment by his female superior. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra and was the third film collaboration between Kumar and Kapoor, and Kumar and Chopra. Aitraaz features Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal and Annu Kapoor in supporting roles. Its score was composed by Himesh Reshammiya, with lyrics by Sameer. The film is inspired by the 1994 American film Disclosure.

The film was released worldwide on 12 November 2004 to positive reviews, and Chopra received critical acclaim for her role as Sonia Roy, an ambitious woman who accuses an employee of sexual harassment, a first in Hindi cinema. The film grossed about ₹240 million (US$3.5 million) domestically, and was a commercial success. Aitraaz received a number of nominations, winning several awards (including an individual one for Chopra). At the 50th Filmfare Awards the film received two nominations, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Performance in a Negative Role, becoming the second (and final) actress to win the award after Kajol; the category was discontinued in 2008. Aitraaz was remade in Kannada as Shrimathi in 2011.
