Swirl were a Sydney, Australia-based indie rock band, forming around 1990 and breaking up in 2002. They released three albums and a number of EP's, mostly through independent Sydney label Half A Cow.

History

Their debut album Aurora (1992) was mostly rock with some shoegazer elements, such as extensive use of guitar fuzz and reverb on vocals. Their next album, 1994's The Last Unicorn went further into shoegazing territory, with layered, feedback-washed guitar solos and ambient instrumental tracks between songs; it also featured a guest performance by Lara Goodridge, later of the FourPlay String Quartet, on violin. In subsequent years, Swirl released a few EPs and played live in Sydney, Melbourne and other Australian cities.

Their last studio album, Light Fill My Room, was released in 2001 on independent record label Um & Ah; it had been recorded a few years earlier and financed by Festival Mushroom Records, although the major label dropped them and the release was thus held up. Light Fill My Room was a more polished, radio-friendly affair; it had elements of Swirl's shoegazing sound, but also ballads and even a children's choir on one song. Swirl broke up in December 2002; the various members are pursuing other musical projects.

Heathen (David Bowie album)

Heathen is the twenty-second studio album by English rock musician David Bowie, released in 2002. It was considered a comeback for him in the US market; it was his highest charting album (number 14) since Tonight (1984), and earned some of his strongest reviews since Let's Dance (1983). Worldwide, it sold more than two million copies and experienced a four-month run on the UK charts. Although its production had started before the September 11 attacks in 2001, the album was finished after that date, which resulted in the influencing of its concept.

Recording and production

Heathen marked the return of record producer Tony Visconti, who co-produced (with David Bowie himself) several of Bowie's classic albums. The last album Visconti had co-produced was Scary Monsters in 1980. This was the first album since Bowie's pre-Tin Machine work to not include guitarist Reeves Gabrels

Originally, Bowie had recorded the album Toy for release in 2000 or '01. This album was meant to feature some new songs and remakes of some his lesser-known songs from the 1960s. Although Toy remains officially unreleased, a few of its tracks—including "Afraid" and "Slip Away" (then titled "Uncle Floyd")—appear on Heathen. Some other re-recorded songs were included as B-sides to the singles from Heathen.

Afraid (Mötley Crüe song)

"Afraid" is a song by the American heavy metal band Mötley Crüe, released on their 1997 album Generation Swine. A two-track pig promo picture CD includes the 3:56 Swine Mix and 4:10 Rave Mix. Written by bassist Nikki Sixx, the lyrics were inspired by the early stages of his relationship with Donna D'Errico, when he felt she was running away from him from fear of getting too close. The song charted at number 10 on the Mainstream rock charts. This is the first single featuring Vince Neil on lead vocals since their cover of Anarchy in the U.K. back in 1991.

Music video

A video was made to promote the single, and was directed by Nancy Baldawil, and produced by Devin Whatley and Joseph Uliano. The video was filmed in May 1997, and first aired on June 9 of that year. Featured in the video is Hustler Magazine head Larry Flynt.
