Adam Malik

Adam Malik Batubara (22 July 1917 – 5 September 1984) was Indonesia's third vice president, a senior diplomat, foreign minister, and one of the pioneers of Indonesian journalism.

Early life

Malik was born in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, Dutch East Indies to Abdul Malik Batubara and Salamah Lubis. He is from a Batak Mandailing Muslim family of Batubara clan. After completing Junior High School, he received his first job as a shopkeeper, filling in time by reading books and increasing his knowledge.

Malik quickly developed an interest in politics and aged just 17, became the Chairman of the Pematang Siantar branch of Partindo (Indonesia Party). In this position, Malik campaigned for the Dutch Colonial Government to grant independence to Indonesia. As a result of this, Malik was put in prison for disobeying the Colonial Government's ban on political assemblies. Once he was freed, Malik left Pematang Siantar for Jakarta.

Career

After leaving hometown, Malik pursued a job as a journalist. He wrote for Partindo's Party Magazine and Pelita Andalas Newspaper. In 1937, along with like-minded colleagues, Malik formed ANTARA. ANTARA would develop to become Indonesia's national news agency.

Adam Malik (tennis)

Adam Malik (born 10 May 1967) is a former professional tennis player from Malaysia.

Career

Malik was just 14 when he made his Davis Cup debut for Malaysia, against Indonesia in 1982.

He moved to Australia at the age of 16 to attend boarding school. After he completed his schooling he studied at the University of Kentucky in the United States. He played NCAA tennis for the university and was an All-American in both singles and doubles, before becoming the first every Malaysian player to turn professional.

It would be in doubles that he had most of his success on the ATP Tour. Malik and his former NCAA partner, Rich Benson, made the semi-finals of the Kuala Lumpur Open in 1993. Also that year, Malik and Francisco Montana, upset top seeds Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis at the 1993 Schenectady Open. In 1994, Malik teamed up with Jeff Tarango in the ATP St. Pölten event and the pair finished runners-up. He remained with Tarango for the 1995 Australian Open, the only Grand Slam tournament that the Malaysian played during his career. The pair lost in the opening round to Jon Ireland and Libor Pimek, losing 7-9 in the deciding set.

Adam was a major character in the 1994 novel, Mordenheim, written by Chet Williamson.

Fictional character biography

Adam is the darklord of Lamordia. Known as Mordenheim's Monster or the Creature, he is an extremely intelligent and nimble dread flesh golem, based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Adam is the most successful creation of Dr. Victor Mordenheim in his research into the creation of life, albeit the one that causes him grief unmeasured. Adam reduced the doctor's wife Elise to a vegetative state and apparently murdered their adopted daughter Eva.

The two are inextricably bound together: Dr. Mordenheim has Adam's immortality, and in return Adam shares the doctor's anguish.

Usually hidden from sight, Adam is believed to spend most of his time on the Isle of Agony, part of the archipelago known as the Finger.
