Acid Test (band)

Acid Test was an alternative rock band formed in Toronto, Canada, in 1990. The band consisted of vocalist and bassist Lucy Di Santo, guitarist Steve Fall, keyboardist Atom Percy, drummer Jim Alty, and DJ, Mike Harland. Fall played a prominent role in the 1992 black comedy, Highway 61, directed by Bruce McDonald, and the band was created to perform two songs on the movie's soundtrack ("Mr. Skin" and "Dance").

Recorded output

After independently releasing an album on Eggplant Records, Sire Records (Warner Music Group) signed the band in 1993, releasing the album Drop that year. In addition to regular band members, Drop also featured Geoff Bennett (percussion) and Jeff Dalziel (programming).

Touring

The band was the opening act for Nine Inch Nails, Grace Jones, Snow, 54-40, The Ocean Blue, and Soundgarden.

Other film score contributions

Acid Test also contributed to the soundtracks for Martin Scorsese's Naked In New York, Bruce McDonald's Highway 61, and the documentary, Talk 16.

Acid test (gold)

An acid test is any qualitative chemical or metallurgical assay which uses acid; most commonly, and historically, the use of a strong acid to distinguish gold from base metals. Figuratively, acid test is any definitive test for some attribute, e.g. of a person's character, or of the performance of some product.

Chemistry

Testing for gold with acid focuses around the fact that gold is a noble metal which is resistant to change by corrosion, oxidation or acid. The acid test for gold is to rub the gold-colored item on black stone, which will leave an easily visible mark. The mark is tested by applying aqua fortis (nitric acid), which dissolves the mark of any item that is not gold. If the mark remains, it is tested by applying aqua regia (nitric acid and hydrochloric acid). If the mark is removed, then this test dissolved the gold, proving the item to be genuine gold. More accurate testing of the item for its fineness or purity can be done through the use of differencing strengths of aqua regia and comparative testing of gold items of known fineness.

Quick ratio

In finance, the Acid-test or quick ratio or liquidity ratio measures the ability of a company to use its near cash or quick assets to extinguish or retire its current liabilities immediately. Quick assets include those current assets that presumably can be quickly converted to cash at close to their book values. A company with a quick ratio of less than 1 cannot currently fully pay back its current liabilities.

Formula

Note that inventory is excluded from the sum of assets in the quick ratio, but included in the current ratio. Ratios are tests of viability for business entities but do not give a complete picture of the business' health. If a business has large amounts in accounts receivable which are due for payment after a long period (say 120 days), and essential business expenses and accounts payable due for immediate payment, the quick ratio may look healthy when the business is actually about to run out of cash. In contrast, if the business has negotiated fast payment or cash from customers, and long terms from suppliers, it may have a very low quick ratio and yet be very healthy.
