Achanta

Achanta is a village and a mandal in West Godavari district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India.

Geography

Achanta is a village located in Godavari river basin (Andhra Pradesh, India) Map near towns like palakollu,Tanuku, Bhimavaram.Near this village there are so many godavari towns like Narsapur,Siddhantamand koderu.

History

A Great leader of India Mahatma Gandhi visited Achanta. It has a wide sphere of Political history. CPI (Communist Party of India- before split up) has had a great influence on the people which maybe witnessed by the CPI symbol at the village entrance.Most of the Communist leaders have taken shelter in this village during the 1950s. Several stone inscriptions found on temples in Achanta suggest that it may have served as an important religious center for Eastern Chalukyan Empire (700 AD - 1130A D). . An ancient Jain statue was found in an excavation. A merchant of Narsapur, recently constructed a Jain temple in the heart of Achanta to the above Jain statue where it rests in. On 10 January 2010 some ancient bricks and a shiva linga of a temple have been found out during digging of a reservoir near temple. Tests are being made by archeologists for knowing the period of the linga and bricks. A large snake is found to be around the linga. But it has been killed while digging. According to some rumours that the person in the dig machine became blind. Musical Maestro S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, who was supposed to give a performance on Maha Shivarathri in 1975 was driven away due to a political outburst in the event, This has been considered the disgraceful moment in the history of Achanta.

Achanta Assembly constituency is a constituency of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, India. It is one of 15 constituencies in the West Godavari district.

Overview

It is part of the Narsapuram Lok Sabha constituency along with another six Vidhan Sabha segments, namely, Palakol, Narasapuram, Bhimavaram, Undi, Tanuku, and Tadepalligudem.
