Height above ground level

In aviation, atmospheric sciences and broadcasting, a height above ground level (AGL) is a height measured with respect to the underlying ground surface. This is as opposed to altitude/elevation above mean sea level (AMSL), or (in broadcast engineering) height above average terrain (HAAT). In other words, these expressions (AGL, AMSL, HAAT) indicate where the "zero level" or "reference altitude" is located.

Aviation

A pilot flying an aircraft under instrument flight rules (typically under poor visibility conditions) must rely on the aircraft's altimeter to decide when to deploy the undercarriage and prepare for landing. Therefore the pilot needs reliable information on the height of the plane with respect to the landing area (usually an airport). The altimeter, which is usually a barometer calibrated in units of distance instead of atmospheric pressure, can therefore be set in such a way as to indicate the height of the aircraft above ground. This is done by communicating with the control tower of the airport (to get the current surface pressure) and setting the altimeter so as to read zero on the ground of that airport. Confusion between AGL and AMSL, or improper calibration of the altimeter, may result in controlled flight into terrain, a crash of a fully functioning aircraft under pilot control.

Above Ground was a band from Christchurch, New Zealand formed in 1983.

History

Above Ground developed out of the friendship of the four members: Bill Direen (Guitar/Vocals), Carol Woodward (Keyboards), Maryrose Wilkinson (Bass/Vocals) and Stuart Page (Drums). The group played locally and at the Punakaiki Music Festival (West Coast, New Zealand); and would have been forgotten like a lot of bands had Page not recorded nearly every practice and concert and organised the "Gone AIWA" cassette (1983), re-released in 2011 on vinyl by Siltbreeze. Historian of NZ music, John Dix, mentions the group in his encyclopaedia of NZ Rock and Roll Stranded in Paradise.

Ground Level was an Australian-based electronic music performance and production duo: David John Walker (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) and Jean-Marie Guilfoil (Madison, Wisconsin, United States). Their single, "Dreams of Heaven" was an underground dance club release which peaked at No. 54 on the mainstream UK Singles Chart in January 1993. They released an album, New Moon in 1995.

Background

Ground Level formed in Melbourne as the electronic duo of David John Walker and Jean-Marie Guilfoil. In 1990, they issued their first single, "Deputy of Love", as a 12" three-track under the name, Ground Level featuring D J Walker, on an independent label. By 1992, they had signed with Vicious Vinyl and released "God Intended" in January, which was written and produced by Walker. "Out of Body" appeared in June, followed by Ground Level's fourth single, "Dreams of Heaven", which peaked at No. 54 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1993. According to Vicious Vinyl label owner, Andy Van (aka Andy Van Dorsselaer see Madison Avenue), the single was one of their biggest successes "[it] was a very, very big hit. It got to No. 3 on the dance charts in the UK."
