Abdul Wahid Khan

Abdul Wahid Khan (born 1872-died 1949) was an Indian classical singer, from the Kirana gharana. He died in 1949 in Lahore, Pakistan.

Early life and background

Abdul Wahid Khan initially learned vocal and sarangi from his father, Abdul Majid Khan. Around age 12 he moved to Kolhapur to learn from Ustad Langde Haider Baksh Khan, a disciple of Bande Ali Khan.

Khansahib founded the Kirana gharana musical family with Abdul Karim Khan. Abdul Karim Khan had married Abdul Wahid Khan's sister, Gafooran Bibi. The relationship between Khan and Abdul Karim later soured when Abdul Karim neglected Gafooran Bibi and married his student, Tarabai Mane. Abdul Wahid Khan's hearing was deficient and he was sometimes referred to as Behre Wahid Khan (Deaf Wahid Khan). Wahid Khan's son Hafizullah Khan was born in 1946. Hafizullah's uncles trained him in music, and he became an accomplished sarangi player.

Singing career

Khansahib forbade recordings of his performances to avoid imitation by other singers. Only three of his performances survived, recordings of the ragas Patdip, Multani, and Darbari Kanada, accompanied by Chatur Lal on tabla. They were preserved by music producer Jivan Lal Mattoo, who secretly recorded a radio broadcast in 1947, a few days before his death, to document Khan's style.

Abdul Wahid

Abdul Wahid (Arabic: عبد الواحد ‎) is a male Muslim given name, and in modern usage, surname. It is built from the Arabic words Abd, al- and Wahid. The name means "servant of the One", Al-Wāhid being one of the names of God in the Qur'an, which give rise to the Muslim theophoric names.

The letter a of the al- is unstressed, and can be transliterated by almost any vowel, often by u. Alternative transliterations include Abdul Waahid, Abdul Wahed. Abdel Wahid, Abdelouahad (French transliteration) and others, all being subject to variable spacing and hyphenation.

Abdul Wahid (Bagram detainee)

Abdul Wahid was a citizen of Afghanistan whose autopsy was held in the United States's Bagram Theater detention facility. He was beaten to death on November 6, 2003.

Army pathologist Colonel Kathleen Ingwersen concluded his death was a homicide. She wrote on his death certificate that he died from "Multiple blunt force injuries complicated by probable rhabdomyolysis [extensive crush injuries of the muscles]."

Abdul Wahid's cousin Abdul Haleem reported that he was also apprehended, and tortured, on November 3, 2003. He and Abdul Wahid's father attributed the abuse to Afghan soldiers, but said American soldiers were aware of the abuse, and didn't intervene.

Abdul Wahid's father said his heavily scarred body was returned to his family two months after his capture, together with a letter from US authorities. According to the Associated Press:

He said the letter — which a local doctor translated for him — expressed regret over the death but said Wahid had died before the United States had "got him." The U.S. military could not verify this information.

Wahid Khan

Ustad Wahid Khan was an Indian surbahar and sitar player. He was the son of Imdad Khan and belonged to the Imdadkhani gharana or Etawah Gharana of classical music.

Early life

Wahid Khan was born in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. He was still quite young when his father Imdad Khan moved to Kolkata from Etawah with his family. In Kolkata the family lived in the house of the noted connoisseur Taraprasad Ghosh, where Imdad Khan rigorously trained his sons, Wahid Khan and Enayat Khan, in sitar and surbahar. Wahid Khan specialised in the surbahar while Enayat Khan specialised in sitar.

Wahid Khan, at a very young age, was first initiated into Dhrupad, Khayal and Thumri and then trained extensively on the Sitar and Surbahar, by Imdad Khan for many years. Under the guidance and supervision of his father, Wahid Khan put in many years of very rigorous riyaz and mastered both the Sitar and Surbahar.

Performing career

Imdad Khan, later, moved out of Kolkata to settle in Indore as the Court-musician of the Maharaja Holkar of Indore. His sons Enayat Khan and Wahid Khan accompanied him to Indore. There Imdad Khan died, following which Enayat Khan left Indore and returned to Kolkata, while Wahid Khan was appointed the Court-musician of the Indore Darbar, where he lived for 18 years on a very high salary. Wahid Khan also served the Patiala Darbar for 3 years as its Court-musician. He was also the Court-musician of the Nizam of Hyderabad.
