Abdul Sattar Edhi

Abdul Sattar Edhi, NI (Memoni, Urdu: عبدالستار ایدھی‎) is a prominent Pakistani philanthropist, social activist, ascetic and humanitarian. He is the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation.

Together with his wife, Bilquis Edhi, he received the 1986 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service. He is also the recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize and the Balzan Prize. In 2006, Institute of Business Administration Pakistan conferred an honoris causa degree of Doctor of Social Service Management for his services. In September 2010, Edhi was also awarded an honorary degree of Doctorate by the University of Bedfordshire. In 1985 Edhi received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz from the Government of Pakistan. On 1 January 2014, Edhi was voted Person of the year 2013 by the readers of The Express Tribune.

Abdul Sattar Edhi has been running the Edhi Foundation in Pakistan for the better part of six decades. The foundation owns and operates a large ambulance service, free nursing homes, orphanages, clinics, women’s shelters, food kitchens, and rehabilitation centers for drug addicts and mentally ill individuals all across the country.

Abdul Sattar is an Indian politician belonging to the Indian National Congress Indian National Congress Party from Maharashtra. He was sworn in as the Cabinet Minister, Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra State

Political career

He contested the Grampanchayat elections in 1984 and achieved success. After that he entered Tehsil(Taluka) politics in 1994-95 after which he became the Mayor (Nagardhyaksha) of Sillod district on 5 March 1994. He was elected as the MLA of Sillod by the Vidhanparishad of Aurangabad in the year of 2001. After his tenure as a MLA,Abdul Sattar contested for the elections of legislative Assembly in 2004 in which he lost with shortage of 301 votes. Later he was elected as the MLA from Sillod Soegaon constituency and was sworn in as the Cabinet Minister (Animal Husbandry) of Maharashtra recently.

Abdul Sattar was first elected as the Mayor of Sillod in the year of 1994 after which he approached Congress in 1999 to get a ticket for the Legislative Assembly Elections, but unfortunately he couldn't bag the ticket despite having a huge public support. Looking at the support from his supporters he campaigned for the same election independently and managed to get the 2nd position with good number of votes while the other congress official candidate struggled to achieve the 4th position.

Abdul Sattar (Arabic: عبد الستار ‎) is a male Muslim given name, built on the Arabic words Abd, al- and Sattar. The name means "servant of the Veiler (of sins)".

Because the letter s is a sun letter, the letter l of the al- is usually assimilated to it. Thus although the name is written with letters corresponding to Abd al-Sattar, the usual pronunciation corresponds to Abd as-Sattar. Pakistani detainees at Guantanamo Bay

According to the United States Department of Defense, there were five dozen Pakistan detainees in Guantanamo prior to May 15, 2006. The Guantanamo Bay detention camp was opened on January 11, 2002. In the summer of 2004, following the United States Supreme Court's ruling in Rasul v. Bush, the Department of Defense stopped transferring men and boys to Guantanamo. The Supreme Court determined that the detainees had to be given a chance to challenge their detentions in an impartial tribunal.

On September 6, 2006 United States President George W. Bush announced the transfer of 14 high-value detainees from CIA custody to military custody at Guantanamo, including several additional Pakistanis.

On September 7, 2008 Pakistan's Daily Times quoted Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan Ambassador to the United States, stating that only five Pakistanis remained in captivity in Guantanamo: Ume Amaar Al Balochi, Majid Khan, Abdul Rabbani, Muhammad Ahmed, Ghulam Rabbani and Saifullah. A sixth man, Qari Muhammad Saeed, was reported to have been released on August 29, 2008.
