Abdul Qadir

Abdul Qadir, Abd al-Qadir or Abdulkadir (Arabic: عبد القادر‎) is a male Muslim given name. It is formed from the Arabic words Abd, al- and Qadir. The name means "servant of the powerful", Al-Qādir being one of the names of God in the Qur'an, which give rise to the Muslim theophoric names.

The letter a of the al- is unstressed, and can be transliterated by almost any vowel, often by u. So the first part can appear as Abdel, Abdul or Abdal. The second part can be transliterated Qader, Kadir, Kader, Gadir or in other ways, and the whole name subject to variable spacing and hyphenation.

There is a related but much less common name, Abdul Qadeer (Arabic: عبد القدیر‎), with a similar meaning. The two may become confused when transliterated, and a few of the names below may be instances of the latter name.

Abdul Qadir (cricketer)

Abdul Qadir Khan (Urdu: عبد القادر خان‎, born 15 September 1955 in Lahore) is a former Pakistani international cricketer whose main role was as a leg spin bowler. Later he was a commentator and Chief Selector of the Pakistan Cricket Board, from which post he resigned because of differences with the top brass of Pakistan cricket. Qadir appeared in 67 Test and 104 One Day International (ODI) matches between 1977 and 1993, and captained the Pakistan cricket team in five ODIs. In Test cricket, his best performance for a series was 30 wickets for 437 runs, against England in 1987. His best bowling figures for an innings were nine wickets for 56 against the same team at the Gaddafi Stadium. In ODIs, his best bowling figures were five wickets for 44 runs against Sri Lanka during the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He was a member of Pakistani team in the 1983 and 1987 Cricket World Cups. Yahoo! Cricket described Qadir as "a master of the leg-spin" who "mastered the googlies, the flippers, the leg-breaks and the topspins." He is widely regarded as a top spin bowler of his generation and was included in Richie Benaud's Greatest XI shortlist of imaginary cricket team from the best players available from all countries and eras. Former English captain Graham Gooch said that "Qadir was even finer than Shane Warne".

Abdul Qadir (Muslim leader)

Sir Abdul Qadir (1872–1950) was a Muslim editor. He was the leader of Anjuman-i-Himayat-i-Islam in 1941. He used his position as the lead of this organization to form other, pro-partition of India organizations.

Qadir was the editor of the Observer, the first Muslim newspaper published in English. In 1901 he launched the magazine Makhzan, an Urdu language publication. This magazine published the early works of Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

In 1904 Qadir went to study law in London, and was called to the bar in 1907 after which he returned to India.

Qadir had been knighted by the British in 1927 and in 1935 had been a member of the governing council of India.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's book Mahatma Gandhi contains a chapter by Qadir, where he particularly relates his various experiences with the understanding of Gandhi in Europe in the 1930s.

His son Manzur Qadir, was a prominent Pakistani jurist who served as the Foreign Minister of Pakistan during the military rule of Ayub Khan.
