Abdul Majid

Abdul Majid (Arabic: عبد المجيد ‎) is a Muslim male given name and, in modern usage, surname. It is built from the Arabic words Abd, al- and Majid. The name means "servant of the All-glorious", Al-Majīd being one of the names of God in the Qur'an, which give rise to the Muslim theophoric names.

The letter a of the al- is unstressed, and can be transliterated by almost any vowel, often by e. So the first part can appear as Abdel, Abdul or Abd-al. The second part may appear as Majid, Majeed, Mecid (Turkish), Magid (Egyptian) or in other ways. The whole name is subject to variable spacing and hyphenation.

There is a distinct but closely related name, Abdul Maajid (Arabic: عبد الماجد ‎), with a similar meaning, formed on the Qur'anic name Al-Mājid. The two names are difficult to distinguish in transliteration, and some of the names below are instance of the latter one.

Black Liberation Army

The Black Liberation Army (BLA) was an underground, black nationalist militant organization that operated in the United States from 1970 to 1981. Composed largely of former Black Panthers (BPP), the organization's program was one of "armed struggle", and its stated goal was to "take up arms for the liberation and self-determination of black people in the United States." The BLA carried out a series of bombings, murders, robberies (what participants termed "expropriations"), and prison breaks.

Formation

The Black Liberation Army gained strength as Black Panther Party membership declined. By 1970, police and FBI pressure (see COINTELPRO), infiltration, sectarianism, the lengthy prison sentences and deaths of key members (among them Fred Hampton, at the hands of police), had significantly undermined the Black Panther Party. This convinced many former party members of the desirability of an underground existence, including the assumption that a new period of violent repression was at hand. BLA members operated under the belief that only through covert means, including but not limited to violent acts, could the movement be continued until such a time when an above-ground existence was possible.

Dr. Abdul Majid (Urdu):(عبد لماجد) is a Pakistani astrophysicist and scientist in the field of space technology. He is a former chairman of Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission from 1997 to 2001. He had made significant contributions to Pakistan's space program. During his tenure as SUPARCO Administrator, Pakistan launched its two Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which were masterminded and developed by him. He also initiated a Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) project at SUPARCO. He retired from SUPARCO in 2001 as a chief scientist. Since his retirement, he has been inactive from Pakistan's space program and currently resides in Karachi where he lives a very quiet life there.

Abdul Majid was Born in Narowal, Pakistan from where he received his elementary and high school education. He received BSc (hons) and MSc in Nuclear Physics from Government College, Punjab University in 1962 and was awarded the Roll of Honours. His thesis on 'Radiative Capture of Neutrons' was rated as one of the best ever submitted for a master's degree by Prof. Dr Rafi M. Chaudhary. Under NASA fellowship program he studied Astrogeophysics at Colorado University, Boulder, Colorado.Astrophysics. <For his PhD he worked on Radio interferometric detection of Gravity Waves under Sir Granville Jones/Dr PJSWilliams at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth UK. The project involved fabrication of phase switched receivers as an integral constituent of widely spaced radio interferometers. The system detected gravity waves as travelling ionospheric disturbances.
