They also recruited Vredehammer guitarist and vocalist Per Valla to tour with the band as lead guitarist. The band is set to enter a recording studio later this year to work on a new 2016 album. During their Debut performance at Tuska Open Air 2015, they played a completed song titled Fenrir Hunts that will be featured on their upcoming 2016 album. Their debut self titled album Abbath was released January 22, 2016 on Season of Mist. On December 12, 2015, it was announced that drummer Creature left the band. On January 12, 2016, the entire album was made available for streaming.
Reviewing for Exclaim!, Renee Trotier wrote that Abbath has "proven that he doesn't need the Immortal name to expand his black metal legacy."MetalSucks' Excretakano described the record as "one hell of a ride, and very true to the music our man has built his name around."

It was me, peering through the looking-glass.
Beyond the embrace of Christ.
Like the secret face within the tapestry.
Like a bird of prey over the crest.
And she was swathed in sorrow, as if born within its mask.
Her candlelight snuffed, the icon smiled.
Emptiness followed by her wake.
I could clasp her in undying love.
Within ghostlike rapture the final word was mine.
She faced me in awe. 'twas a token of ebony colour.
Embodied in faint vapour.
Wandering through April's fire.
Compelled to grasp and to hold the one that was you.
I will endure, hide away.
I would outrun the scythe, glaring with failure.
It is a mere destiny I thought, a threshold I had crossed before.
The rain was waving goodbye, and when the night came
the forest folded its branches around me.
Something passed by, and I went into a dream.
She laughing and weeping at once: "take me away".
