Asan is an alternative colloquial term used by locals to address teachers.[citation needed]Generally the Kaniyar or Ganaka people of Kerala in India, particularly from southern region were known as Asan by virtue of their vocation as Kalari teachers. By 19th century and later, people from many other castes( Nair, Ezhava, Christian )are also begun to adopt this title.
