A (Ayumi Hamasaki album)

"A" is an EP recorded by Japanese recording artist Ayumi Hamasaki for her second studio album, Loveppears (1999). The songs on the EP consists off "Monochrome", "Too Late", "Trauma" and "End roll". The songs were written all by Hamasaki herself, composed by Dai Nagao and production was handled by Max Matsuura. The songs featured the same instrumentation and composition like the parent album Loveppears, utilizing an influence in dance music and electronic music. Lyrically, the songs still deal with loneliness and sadness, a prominent theme for both the parent album and the previous record Hamasaki released.

A received favorable reception from most music critics, who cited it as an album and career standout. The song was an success in Japan, peaking at number one on the Oricon Singles Chart. It became her best selling single to date and 57th best Japanese single, with over 1.6 million units shipped there. No music videos were issued for the single, becoming her first EP to not feature any singles.

A Single

A Single was the first limited edition release by The Cure. It was released as a gatefold double pack of 7" singles with a total of four tracks. It has also been released as a 10" record which contains all four songs from the double 7" pack, as well as a single 7" featuring only "The Hanging Garden" and "Killing an Arab" (FICS 15).

Whilst the official name is "A Single", this release is often referred to as "The Hanging Garden" as a way of avoiding confusion.

The single made it to number 34 in the UK Singles Chart.

Reception

NME writer Adrian Thrills was not impressed with the single, writing "The Cure have drifted disappointingly and indulgently from the idllic pop invention of their younger days".BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel included the song at number 25 in his Festive Fifty list for 1982. In his review for Allmusic, Stewart Mason noted that Robert Smith was splitting his time between The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees at this time and went on to note that this song was heavily influenced by the Banshees.

Single (cricket)

In the sport of cricket, a single is scored when the batsman take one run, either following a successful shot (with the run attributed to the on-strike batsman) or when running for a bye or leg bye (counted as an extra).

Unlike when a boundary is hit (and the run are scored even if the batsmen don't leave their creases), scoring a single requires the batsmen to physically run between the wickets. This introduces the risk of being run out, so effective communication between the batsmen is vital. If one batsman attempts to run and the other stays put, then a humiliating run out is likely, but quick and well attuned batsmen may be able to run "quick singles" when other batsmen wouldn't. In general, singles are much easier to score when the field is set further out, but bringing more fielders in makes it easier for the on-strike batsman to hit boundaries.

Singles usually rotate the strike in a partnership, but because the bowling end changes at the end of an over, singles deliberately only taken at the end of an over are used by quality batsmen to keep the strike when they are batting with the tail-enders, who are unlikely to survive for long against quality bowling and whom an experienced batsman will normally try to protect.
