AIK Fotboll

AIK, Swedish pronunciation: [ˈɑː.i:.ˈkɔː] (LSE: 0DI2), an abbreviation for Allmänna Idrottsklubben (literally "The General Athletics Club"), is a Swedish football club based at Friends Arena in Solna, a municipality in Stockholm County bordering Stockholm City Centre. The club was formed in 1891 in central Stockholm and the football department was formed in 1896.

League champions in 2009, AIK are currently third in the all-time Allsvenskan table. The club holds the record for being the Swedish club with most seasons in the top flight. AIK reached the quarter-finals of the 1996–97 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and qualified for the 1999–2000 UEFA Champions League group stage and the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League group stage. The club is affiliated with the Stockholm Football Association.

History

Beginnings and golden period (1891-1945)

Founded in 1891 by Isidor Behrens in Stockholm, at the downtown address of Biblioteksgatan 8, the club's full name, "Allmänna Idrottsklubben", translates to "The General Sports Club" or "The Public Sports Club". The name was chosen to reflect that the club was open for everyone, and also that athletics, at the time called "allmän idrott" in Swedish, was considered the club's main sport.

AIK Fotboll (women)

AIK Fotboll Damer is a Swedish women's association football club from Stockholm, currently competing in the Elitettan. The team, a section of AIK, is affiliated to the Stockholms Fotbollförbund and plays in the Skytteholms IP in Solna, Stockholm.

Founded in 1970, AIK first earned promotion to the Damallsvenskan in 1992, and avoided relegation for two seasons before ending second to last in 1995. A decade passed before the team was back for the 2005 season. AIK was promptly relegated but earned its third promotion the next year. The following years marked the team's major successes yet, with AIK reaching the national Cup's final in 2007, which they lost 4–3 against Umeå IK, and ending 4th in 2008. After four years in top flight AIK was relegated in 2010 but recovered the category for the 2012 season after topping the Swedish First Division's Norrettan Group. They were relegated to the Norrettan after the 2012 season after finishing in last position.
