ABC World News Tonight

ABC World News Tonight (titled as ABC World News Tonight with David Muir for its weeknight broadcasts since September 2014) is the flagship daily evening television news program of ABC News, the news division of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) television network in the United States. Since 2014, the program's weekday broadcasts have been anchored by David Muir. Since 2015, Cecilia Vega and Tom Llamas have rotated as anchors of the Saturday editions and Sunday editions.

The program has been anchored at various times by a number of other presenters since its debut in 1953. It also has used various titles, including ABC Evening News from 1970 to 1978, World News Tonight from 1978 to 2006, and ABC World News from 2006 to 2014. It is the second-most watched network newscast in the United States, trailing behind NBC Nightly News in the ratings.

History

ABC began a nightly newscast in the summer of 1948, when H. R. Baukhage and Jim Gibbons hosted News and Views. This was succeeded by After The Deadlines in 1951 and All Star News in 1952. In the fall of 1953, John Charles Daly began anchoring the then-15-minute John Charles Daly and the News. Daly, who had served as host of the CBS game show What's My Line? contemporaneously, anchored the newscast until 1960, with multiple hosts and formats succeeding him. Anchors of the program during the early 1960s included Alex Dreier, John Secondari, Fendall Winston Yerxa, Al Mann, Bill Shadel, John Cameron Swayze (formerly of NBC), Bill Laurence and Bill Sheehan. In 1962, Ron Cochran was appointed as full-time anchor, staying with the program until 1965. After Cochran left the program, Peter Jennings, a Canadian journalist who was 26 years old at the time, was named anchor of the retitled Peter Jennings with the News.

Sky World News Tonight (also referred to on air as World News Tonight) was a dedicated international news programme which was shown between 8pm and 9pm British time every weekday on Sky News. The show launched on 24 October 2005 as part of a wider revamp of the channel. Its production team was also responsible for putting together Sky World News and the Sky Review and Business report. The show was replaced on 10 July 2006 by Sky News with Martin Stanford. The show featured in-depth reports, analysis and comment based around news stories from around the world (which may or may not have been part of the channel's news coverage earlier in the day), and was presented by James Rubin. It consisted of the main presentation desk revolving to a presentation position of Rubin seated in front of a neon globe with studio guests then able to be seated either side of him. Note however that many of the show's guests appear via link-up from other countries. While the focus was firmly on events outside of the UK, the show usually incorporated brief domestic news updates. These were typically presented by either Chris Roberts or Gillan Joseph, who co-presented Sky News Tonight at 9pm. Sky News' Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall often contributed material to the programme, and on occasion hosted during Rubin's absence. American neo-conservative commentator William Kristol also frequently appeared from the US as a guest contributor. Rubin has also presented the show from some international locations including Jerusalem, and Aleppo. The show was cancelled on 10 July 2006, along with The Sky Report, as part of a minor re-shuffle of the Sky News schedules. Rubin can still be seen on Sky News as a World News Commentator.

World News Tonight (Sky TV)

Sky World News Tonight (also known on air as World News Tonight) was an international news programme transmitted between 20:00 and 21:00 UK time weekdays on Sky News. It was launched on 24 October 2005 as part of a revamp of the channel but ended less than twelve months later, such is the inexorable climate of broadcast.

How it all started and ended

The production team was responsible for compiling its three main features: Sky World News and the Sky Review and Business report. From its beginnings in the autumn of 2005, this programme was shown right through until July 2006. The show was cancelled on 10 July 2006, along with The Sky Report, as part of a minor re-shuffle of the Sky News schedules, its replacement was Sky News with Martin Stanford.
