A. K. Patel

A. K. Patel is former union minister of state in Government of India. He served as minister of state for chemicals and fertilisers in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1998 to 1999. He was a senior leader of Gujarat Bharatiya Janata Party. He has been representing Mehsana in the Lok Sabha since 1984.

He was born in 1931 in Vadu, Dist- Mehsana, Gujarat . His social roots & family belongs to Betalis Kadva Patel Samaj, Kalol, Dist Gandhinagar.

Academic career

He passed MBBS from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad Dr A. K. Patel practiced medicine in Vijapur Dist Mehsana for many years helping local community. He ultimately join politics in local, state and national level.

Political career

A doctor by profession he joined politics and served as a member of Gujarat Assembly from 1975 to 1984.

He was elected as a MLA ( Dhara Sabhya) from Vijapur seat from 1975-84 in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly ( Gujarat Vidhan Sabha) for 2 terms.

Patel

Patel is a surname representing a caste of village leaders. The village accountant (variously known as Patwari, Talati, Patel, Karnam, Adhikari, Shanbogaru, etc.) is an administrative government position found in rural parts of the Indian sub-continent. The office and the officeholder are called the patwari in Telangana, Bengal, North India and in Pakistan while in Sindh it is called Tapedar. The position is known as the karnam or adhikari in Tamil Nadu, while it is commonly known as the talati in Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The position was known as the kulkarni in Northern Karnataka and Maharashtra. The position was known as the shanbogaru in South Karnataka.

History

The Patwar system was first introduced during the short but eventful rule of Sher Shah Suri and the system was further enhanced by Emperor Akbar. The British colonial era made minor amendments but continued the system.

In 1814, legislation was enacted requiring all villages to maintain an accountant (talati) as an official agent of the government. The Kulkarni Watan was abolished in 1918 and paid talatis from all castes were appointed to the new office of the Talati. In some cases, the talatis were the oppressed castes and the abolishing of the Kulkarni Watan system was viewed as a progressive move.

Aṣíkò

Aṣíkò (Ashiko) is a musical genre similar to sákárà music from Nigeria, West Africa. Aṣíkò was the Christian version of sákárà (Sakara). It developed originally as a type of syncretic street drumming in port towns throughout Anglophone West Africa. By the 1920s it was also played by musicians inland in Yoruba towns like Abęokuta and Ibadan. Isaac O. Delano gives a detailed description of an aṣíkò ensemble in the 1930s:

"Another popular native dance is the "Ashiko". It is not a Yoruba dance in its origin, but was imported from Sierra Leone or somewhere that way. The "Ashiko" dance is chiefly performed by Christian people, and has only one kind of music, rather quicker than the "Sakara" . . . and resembles a fox-trot. No stringed instruments are employed, only drums and carpenter's saw, used occasionally to make a kind of noise on its sharp edge, as an embellishment to "Ashiko" drum music. Sometimes a bottle is also used, a nail beating time on it, for the same purpose. The drummers, five in number, all beat similar drums, and produce a continuous volume of music. The dancing is done by pairs, two ladies and two gentlemen facing each other. The drummers sing as in the "Sakara" dance with chorus boys, but no one else sings with them (Delano [1937] 1973:157)."
