Aída Luz

Aída Luz (1917–2006) was an Argentine actress who primarily worked during the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema, performing on both stage and in films. She won multiple awards for her performances including the Martín Fierro Awards, the ACE de Oro, the Premios Estrella de Mar and the Golden Condor from the Argentine Film Critics Association.

Biography

Aída da Luz Borbón was born on 10 February 1917 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Juan da Luz de Roca and Josefa Borbón. Her brother Jorge Luz would also become a significant figure in the Argentine entertainment industry. She attended the Academy PAADI, and had her entertainment debut on Radio La Nación (which later became Radio Mitre) as a singer. She soon was participating in radio dramas and made the progression to acting in theater. She and her brother joined the original cast of Teatro Caminito under the direction of Cecilio Madanes and performed in plays including "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Steel Magnolias," "Woman of the Year", and "My Fair Lady", among many others.

Luz Casal

Luz Casal (Spanish pronunciation: [luθ kaˈsal]; born November 11, 1958 at Boimorto) is a Spanish pop singer. She grew up in neighbouring Asturias, took singing, piano and ballet classes, and moved to Madrid to pursue a career as a musician.

She became famous in the early 1980s, and remained an important figure in Spanish pop music all through said decade and beyond, with her sound gradually maturing towards soft adult pop. She recorded a cover version of Étienne Daho's French language song "Duel au Soleil" in Spanish called "Un nuevo día brillará", which became a hit song. Since the beginning of her career, she has sold over five million albums.

In 1992, she enjoyed great success with her appearance in the soundtrack of Pedro Almodóvar's acclaimed film High Heels singing Agustín Lara's theme "Piensa en mí".

In January 2007, Luz Casal was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent an operation at the Ruber Clinic in Madrid., seven months later, she revealed to the Spanish media that she had overcome her disease. More recently in May 2010, she announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer in her other breast and had to cancel her current tour to be operated on.

Aida

Aida (Italian: [aˈiːda]) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in Egypt, it was commissioned by and first performed at Cairo's Khedivial Opera House on 24 December 1871; Giovanni Bottesini conducted after Verdi himself withdrew. Today the work holds a central place in the operatic canon, receiving performances every year around the world; at New York's Metropolitan Opera alone, Aida has been sung more than 1,100 times since 1886. Ghislanzoni's scheme follows a scenario often attributed to the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, but Verdi biographer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz argues that the source is actually Temistocle Solera.

Elements of the opera's genesis and sources

Isma'il Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, commissioned Verdi to write an opera for performance to celebrate the opening of the Khedivial Opera House, paying him 150,000 francs, but the premiere was delayed because of the Siege of Paris (1870–71), during the Franco-Prussian War, when the scenery and costumes were stuck in the French capital, and Verdi's Rigoletto was performed instead. Aida eventually premiered in Cairo in late 1871. Contrary to popular belief, the opera was not written to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, for which Verdi had been invited to write an inaugural hymn, but had declined.Metastasio's libretto La Nitteti (1756) was a major source of the plot.

Aida (musical)

Aida (also known as Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida) is a musical with music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls, and David Henry Hwang, and produced by Walt Disney Theatrical.

Aida premiered on Broadway on March 23, 2000, running for 1,852 performances until September 5, 2004 (36th longest-running Broadway musical). The musical also ran from 2002 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2007 during two US national tours, and also ran in international productions which performed in 20 different countries, and is still performed in international productions, regional theatres, colleges and high schools.

Aida was nominated for five Tony Awards and won four in 2000, including Best Musical Score and Best Performance by a Leading Actress. Aida was also named by Time Magazine in 2000 as one of the top ten theatre productions of the year. The First National tour was nominated for nine National Broadway Theatre awards (now "Touring Broadway Awards") and won five awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
