97 B-Line

The 97 B-Line is a bus rapid transit line in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It connects Coquitlam Central Station on the West Coast Express system to Lougheed Town Centre Station on the SkyTrain system. It is operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company and funded by TransLink. Going west, the route goes along Clarke Rd., St. John's St., Ioco Rd, Guildford Way and Pinetree Way, and serves Burnaby, Port Moody, and Coquitlam. The line carried 10,750 passengers on weekdays in 2011 and is expected to be replaced by the Evergreen Line when it opens in 2016.

Unlike the other B-Line services, this route mainly uses conventional 40-foot buses with no special paint scheme. It takes 45 minutes to complete during rush hour, and about 30 minutes off-peak.

B (New York City Subway service)

The B Sixth Avenue Express is a rapid transit service in the B Division of the New York City Subway. Its route emblem, or "bullet", is colored bright orange since it uses the IND Sixth Avenue Line in Manhattan. The B only operates on weekdays except nights. On middays and evenings, the B operates between 145th Street in Harlem, Manhattan and Brighton Beach in Brooklyn via Central Park West Local, the north side of the Manhattan Bridge, and Brighton Express. During rush hours, the B is extended to and from Bedford Park Boulevard in the Bronx via Concourse Local.

History

The designation B was originally intended to designate express trains originating in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan and operating in Midtown Manhattan on the IND Sixth Avenue Line. However, the original B service, beginning with the opening of the Sixth Avenue Line in 1940 and continuing until the opening of the Chrystie Street Connection in 1967, ran only as a rush-hour local between 168th Street – Washington Heights and 34th Street – Herald Square. This service was designated BB in conformance with Independent Subway System protocol of using double letters to indicate local services.

91 B-Line

The 91 B-Line is a future bus rapid transit line in Metro Vancouver, Canada that was outlined in the 2005 Vancouver/UBC Transit Plan for implementation in December 2009. It will replace the 43 Express that travels along 41st Avenue, a major east-west route, and connects the University of British Columbia (UBC) to Joyce Station on the SkyTrain system. The service also connects to the Canada Line at Oakridge – 41st Avenue Station.

Shortfalls in the 2010 TransLink budget meant a delay in the implementation of 91 B-Line, the 95 B-Line (replacing 135 Express service on Hastings Street), and other service expansions. Nevertheless the 43 Express service was included as a main transit connection in a plan released following the opening of the Canada Line, indicating the importance of the route within the Translink network.

98 B-Line

The 98 B-Line was a bus rapid transit line, now defunct, in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It connected Richmond, British Columbia to Downtown Vancouver, with a connection to Vancouver International Airport. It travelled mainly along Granville Street in Vancouver and dedicated bus lane on No. 3 Road in Richmond. It was operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company and was funded by TransLink. The route was 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) long. The line carried over 18,000 passengers daily (, PDF file). It was discontinued on September 7, 2009, two and a half weeks after the opening of the Canada Line, which replaced it.

The 98 B-Line was an experiment in rapid transit using global positioning system (GPS) technology, automated stop announcements, specialized bus stop displays that showed the amount of time until the next bus arrives, and special traffic light signals that sustained green lights long enough for buses to pass through. All these were developed by Siemens. In 2007, TransLink admitted the bus stop displays were frequently broken or inaccurate and that shutting them down was a possibility; however, they remained active until the termination of the route. The GPS system which sustains green lights continues to be operational.()
