3 Idiots

3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian coming of age comedy-drama film co-written, edited, and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Abhijat Joshi wrote the screenplay. It was loosely adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. The film stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Omi Vaidya, Parikshit Sahni and Boman Irani.

Upon release, the film was the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend in India and had the highest opening day collections for an Indian film up until that point. It also held the record for the highest net collections in the first week for a Bollywood film. It also became one of the few Indian films to become successful in East Asian markets such as China, eventually bringing its overseas total to more than US$65 million at the time—the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in overseas markets, before being overtaken by Chennai Express in 2013.

The film is distinctive for featuring real inventions by little-known people in India's backyards. The brains behind the innovations were Remya Jose, a student from Kerala, who created the exercise-bicycle/washing-machine; Mohammad Idris, a barber from Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, who invented a bicycle-powered horse clipper; and Jahangir Painter, a painter from Maharashtra, who made the scooter-powered flour mill. This film was remade in Tamil as Nanban (2012) which also received critical praise and commercial success. It has also been announced that there will be a Chinese remake of the film produced by Stephen Chow and that there are plans for a Hollywood remake produced in the United States. A Telugu remake was planned despite Nanban having a Telugu dubbed version titled Snehitudu.

3 Idiots (TV series)

3 Idiots is a Pakistani TV Show that airs on Aaj TV on Saturdays at 8 pm. Waseem Abbas plays an ordinary office employee, Sabir, and Iftikhar Thakur personates an uneducated villager. On 10 March 2012, Aaj TV canceled the show.

Concept

3 Idiots is a satire show that parodies the political system of Pakistan. The paradox of the show is aimed towards the ‘idiots’ who talk about social issues and are correct. Waseem Abbas mostly begins the program by humoring the democracy. Every episode highlights one single aspect of our social system and evaluates errors versus the un-tapped possibilities with biting wit on Pakistan's problems. The show is arranged at a common man’s café (dhaba).

Cancellation

The Aaj TV administration canceled 3 Idiots after airing its last episode on 10 March 2012. Poor ratings and lack of retention of key staff members was the reason for cancellation.

Nanban (film)

Nanban (English: Friend) is a 2012 Indian Tamil coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Shankar. It was a remake of Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots (2009), which itself was adapted from the novel Five Point Someone – What not to do at IIT! by Chetan Bhagat. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana D'Cruz, Sathyan and Sathyaraj.

The plot of the film illustrates the embankment of two friends on a quest for a lost buddy, who was once an optimistic and successful student. On their journey, they recount their college life and special moments that the three shared up until their lost friend secretly parted ways after convocation. During their quest, the two encounter a rival classmate who once made a long forgotten bet with them, a funeral that goes impossibly out of control, and a wedding they must crash.

The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by Harris Jayaraj and cinematography was handled by Manoj Paramahamsa. The film was produced by Gemini Film Circuit, who had purchased the remake rights of 3 Idiots in early 2010. A lengthy and controversial delay in casting delayed filming by a year. Filming took place for a total of eight months in various locations in Europe and India. The film was released on 12 January 2012 and received critical acclaim and . Its dubbed version in Telugu, Snehithudu, released on 26 January 2012 in Andhra Pradesh to positive reviews. The film was also screened at the Melbourne Film Festival and turned out to be a blockbuster.
