24 Hours and 24 Heures (sometimes abbreviated as 24H) is a chain of free daily newspapers published in Canada. A French edition is published in Montreal by Quebecor Media, while two English editions are published in Toronto and Vancouver by Postmedia (acquired from Quebecor in 2015). Editions previously published in Ottawa, Calgary, and Edmonton ceased publication in 2013.

History

In 2000, Metro International launched its free daily Metro newspaper in Toronto, eventually expanding with local editions across Canada. In Toronto, the Toronto Sun and Toronto Star scrambled to launch their own free dailies, Sun Media's FYI Toronto and Torstar's GTA Today. In mid-2001, GTA Today had merged with Metro and in October of the same year Sun Media ceased publication of FYI Toronto. However, as the Toronto Sun itself had been largely dependent on sales to commuters the success of Metro ate into its market share and in 2003, Sun Media re-entered the giveaway market with the launch of 24 Hours in Toronto.

24 Hours (album)

24 Hours is a 2006 mashup double concept album by The Kleptones. Like other albums by The Kleptones, the album intersperses quotes from movies and television in its songs.

In the three weeks preceding the online release, an EP was released weekly which featured one song along with two to three b-sides which were not included on the album.

On May 16, 2006 an edited version of the track "19:00 Careless Or Dead" was posted on the Bootie website under the title "Careless Or Dead (Bootie Version)".

H&E stain

Hematoxylin and eosin stain or haematoxylin and eosin stain (H&E stain or HE stain) is one of the principal stains in histology. It is the most widely used stain in medical diagnosis and is often the gold standard; for example when a pathologist looks at a biopsy of a suspected cancer, the histological section is likely to be stained with H&E and termed "H&E section", "H+E section", or "HE section". A combination of hematoxylin and eosin, it produces blues, violets, and reds.

Principle

The staining method involves application of hemalum, a complex formed from aluminium ions and hematein (an oxidation product of hematoxylin). Hemalum colors nuclei of cells (and a few other objects, such as keratohyalin granules and calcified material) blue. The nuclear staining is followed by counterstaining with an aqueous or alcoholic solution of eosin Y, which colors eosinophilic structures in various shades of red, pink and orange.

The staining of nuclei by hemalum is ordinarily due to binding of the dye-metal complex to DNA, but nuclear staining can be obtained after extraction of DNA from tissue sections. The mechanism is different from that of nuclear staining by basic (cationic) dyes such as thionine or toluidine blue. Staining by basic dyes occurs only from solutions that are less acidic than hemalum, and it is prevented by prior chemical or enzymatic extraction of nucleic acids. There is evidence to indicate that coordinate bonds, similar to those that hold aluminium and hematein together, bind the hemalum complex to DNA and to carboxy groups of proteins in the nuclear chromatin.

HOn30 gauge

HOn30 (also called HOn2½, HO9 and HOe) gauge is the modelling of narrow gauge railways in HO on N (9 mm/​9 ft 0.354 ¹⁄₈ in) gauge track in 1:87 scale ratio.

Definitions

The term HOn30 (and sometimes HOn2½) is generally used when modelling American prototypes while HOe is used for European prototypes. In the Britain the term OO9 is sometimes used. All these terms refer to models of narrow gauge railways built to the world's most popular model railway scale of HO (1:87) but using a track gauge of 9 mm (9 ft 0.354 ¹⁄₈ in)—the gauge used for N scale models of standard gauge railways. OO9 refers to OO scale, 1:76.2, models on 9mm gauge track. Although the track gauge is 9mm, sometimes N scale track per se is not used because the ties or sleepers are out of scale and too close together. HOn30 track is available.

HOn30

HOn30 is often used to model the 2 ft (610 mm) gauge railroads in the US state of Maine. The first HOn30 / HOn2½ RTR brand introduced in the US was the AHM MinitrainS, initially manufactured by Egger-Bahn and later by Roco and Mehanoteknika Izola, also known as Mehano.
