The 2010 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, held on July 28, 2010,[2] was the 15th consecutive Major League Soccer All-Star Game, a soccer match involving all-stars from Major League Soccer. The MLS All-Stars faced Manchester United of the English Premier League in the seventh All-Star Game that featured the league's best players facing international competition. The match was broadcast in the US on ESPN2 in English and Galavision in Spanish.

Manchester United thrashed the MLS All-Stars 5–2 to become the first international club to defeat the All-Stars in regulation time (fellow Premier League side Everton won the 2009 All-Star Game on penalties). United forward Federico Macheda, who scored the game's first two goals, was named Most Valuable Player.

Houston Dynamo and MLS announced Reliant Stadium as the venue on September 8, 2009.[3] MLS Commissioner Don Garber speculated the league might have drawn a team from Mexico to play the MLS All-Stars in 2010, given the close proximity of the country to Houston.[4]

MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced on July 27, 2009 that Houston had been chosen as the host city for the upcoming 2010 MLS All-Star Game, in a press conference at the Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah during All-Star Week festivities. Garber said that the league was pleasantly surprised by the passionate fanbase in the Houston area and the success of Dynamo organization since it put up roots in the city. Both factors made it an ideal location to host an all-star game.

I don't think that people really expected that Houston, Texas would be a strong, powerful and successful MLS market. It's turned out to be one of our best.

—Don Garber, Major League Soccer Commissioner, [4]

Oliver Luck, president and general manager of the Dynamo at the time of announcement, believed that Houston would be an ideal host city for next year's All-Star Game because the ethnic and cultural makeup of city has made it a natural hotbed for soccer:

I can't offer you the mountains like Salt Lake City has nor I can I offer you nice, cool temperatures, but there's a great fanbase in Houston and our fanbase will be extraordinarily excited about the opportunity to have the MLS All-Stars and a world-class club coming into play.

—Oliver Luck, Houston Dynamo President/GM, [4]

The 2010 MLS All-Star game was the first to be played in the state of Texas.

MLS All-Stars voting [link]

Like the previous year, the selection of the MLS All-Star First XI was determined by an online fan voting system that accounted for 25% of the total vote, with players, coaches and general managers, and the media each holding 25% of the vote. The fan voting period was announced after the start of the 2010 Major League Soccer season. An additional seven players were chosen by the MLS All-Star head coach Bruce Arena and the Commissioner of MLS Don Garber.

Inactive Roster [link]

In addition to the 25-man roster of players available to participate in the match, MLS also announced 7 additional inactive all-stars: goalkeepers Jimmy Nielsen (Kansas City) and Kasey Keller (Seattle), midfielders Joel Lindpere (New York), Robbie Rogers (Columbus), Freddie Ljungberg (Seattle), and forwards Fredy Montero (Seattle) and Conor Casey (Colorado).[5]

2010 Major League Soccer season

The 2010 Major League Soccer season was the 98th season of FIFA-sanctioned soccer, the 32nd with a national first-division league, in the United States and Canada, and the 15th in MLS history. It began on March 25 at Seattle's Qwest Field with Seattle Sounders FC defeating the expansion Philadelphia Union, 2–0. The 2010 MLS All-Star Game was played at Reliant Stadium, hosted by the Houston Dynamo on July 28 as the MLS XI fell 5–2 to visiting Manchester United. The regular season concluded on October 24, with Los Angeles Galaxy winning the Supporters' Shield by one point over Real Salt Lake. Upon the completion of the regular season the 2010 MLS Cup Playoffs culminated on November 21 with a 2–1 victory by the Colorado Rapids over FC Dallas at Toronto's BMO Field. It was the first time the MLS Cup final was played outside the United States.

The expiration of and failure to sign a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players' union threatened the season. Negotiations resulted in a new contract being agreed to on March 20, 2010.

Major League Soccer All-Star Game

The Major League Soccer All-Star Game is an annual soccer game held by Major League Soccer featuring select players from the league against an international club. MLS initially adopted a traditional all-star game format used by other North American sports leagues where the Eastern Conference squared off against the Western Conference. This eventually evolved into the current system where the league annually invites a club from abroad to play against a league all-star team. The MLS All-Stars hold an 8–4 record in the competition marking the season's midpoint. Players are awarded rosters spots through a combination of fan voting and selections by the appointed manager and league commissioner.

In case of a tie after full-time, the game does not use a 30-minute extra time period; instead it goes straight to a penalty shoot-out.

History

Major League Soccer's first all-star game was played at Giants Stadium in the summer of 1996. The game, using the traditional East–West format with players handpicked by the coaching staffs, was the first game of a doubleheader with the Brazilian national team defeating a team of FIFA world all-stars. The matchup between divisions would only be used for six seasons as MLS tried experimenting with different formats. The 1998 All-Star Game placed a team of American MLS players against MLS players from abroad. The 2002 game, the first to use a league-wide all-star team, is the only game to feature a national team opponent. Since then every opponent has been a professional club invited by the league. The MLS All-Stars won their first six games before falling to Everton in penalties in 2009. All games since 2005 have been against a team from Europe. This is a feasible format because unlike MLS (which runs a spring-summer-fall schedule) the major European leagues all run a fall-winter-spring schedule, meaning the middle of the MLS season co-incides with the pre-seasons of most European leagues.

2016 MLS All-Star Game

The 2016 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, the 21st consecutive Major League Soccer All-Star Game, is scheduled to take place on 28 July 2016 at Avaya Stadium, the home of the San Jose Earthquakes. The game will be televised live on ESPN and Univision in the United States, TSN and RDS in Canada. The game will feature the MLS All-Star team playing Arsenal F.C. in a preseason friendly for the Gunners as part of their California Tour.

Footnotes

2004 MLS All-Star Game

The 2004 Major League Soccer All-Star Game was the 9th Major League Soccer All-Star Game, played on July 31, 2004 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. between the Eastern Conference All-Stars and Western Conference All-Stars. The Eastern Conference earned the victory after a hard-fought 3-2 win over the West.

The game was originally scheduled to be between the MLS All-Stars against Real Madrid at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Once the Spanish team instead decided to play friendlies in Japan, they opted out of the game in the United States and MLS was forced to change the All-Star Game's format. The MLS All-Stars eventually played Real Madrid at their home stadium Santiago Bernabéu in the 2005 Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu.

Legends game

Prior to the All-Star Game, a celebration of the tenth anniversary of the 1994 FIFA World Cup saw the U.S. Team that played the Cup against played a selection of international MLS veterans in two 25-minute halves. The game finished 2-2, with Raul Diaz Arce and Mauricio Cienfuegos tying the game in the second-half after the Americans built a lead with Eric Wynalda and Hugo Perez.

All-star game

An all-star game is an exhibition game that purports to showcase the best players (the "stars") of a sports league. The exhibition is between two teams organized solely for the event, usually representing the league's teams based on region or division, but sometimes dividing the players by an attribute such as nationality. Selection of the players may be done by a vote of the coaches and/or news media; in professional leagues, fans may vote on some or all of the roster. An all-star game usually occurs at the midpoint of the regular season. An exception is American football's Pro Bowl, which occurs at the end of the season.

All-star games are organized like regular games, but are often played with less emphasis on victory. Competing goals are to give many players time in the game and to avoid injury. In hockey, for example, there is no serious checking, while in football no blitzing is allowed. In basketball, there is virtually no defense played until the final quarter. However, the Australian State of Origin series does involve physicality that often leads to on-field scuffles.

2002 Major League Baseball All-Star Game

The 2002 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was the 73rd playing of the midsummer classic between the all-stars of the American League (AL) and National League (NL), the two leagues that make up Major League Baseball. The game was held on July 9, 2002 at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the home of the Milwaukee Brewers of the NL. The game controversially ended with a 7–7 tie due to both teams running out of available pitchers. Beginning the next year, home field advantage in the World Series would be awarded to the winning league to prevent ties.

No player was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award due to the game ending in a tie. The roster selection for the 2002 game marked the inaugural All-Star Final Vote competition (then known as "The All-Star 30th Man" competition). Johnny Damon and Andruw Jones represented the American and National Leagues as a result of this contest.

All Star

Estranho seria se eu não me apaixonasse por você
O sal viria doce para os novos lábios
Colombo procurou as Índias, mas a Terra avisto em você
O som que eu ouço são as gírias do seu vocabulário
Estranho é gostar tanto do seu All Star azul
Estranho é pensar que o Bairro das Laranjeiras
Satisfeito, sorri quando chego ali
E entro no elevador
Aperto o 12 que é o seu andar
Não vejo a hora de te encontrar
E continuar aquela conversa
Que não terminamos ontem
Ficou pra hoje
