1982 ICC Trophy

The 1982 ICC Trophy was a limited-overs cricket tournament held in England between 16 June and 10 July 1982. It was the second ICC Trophy tournament to be staged, with matches between the 16 participating teams played over 60 overs a side and with white clothing and red balls. As in the 1979 tournament, all matches were played in the Midlands, though on this occasion the final was held at Grace Road, Leicester, where Zimbabwe who didn't play in the first tournament defeated Bermuda in the final to qualify for the 1983 World Cup. Bad weather hampered the tournament throughout, with a large number of games being called off early or abandoned entirely because of rain; West Africa suffered most, seeing a result in only two of their seven group matches.

Sri Lanka who won the first tournament in 1979 had by now been promoted to full Test and ODI status, and so did not take part and automatically qualify for the World Cup.

Competition format

The 16 teams were divided into two groups of eight. Each teams played each other team in its group once in matches played between 16 June and 5 July, scoring four points for a win and two for a no-result (match started but not finished) or abandoned entirely without a ball being bowled. The top two teams in each group went forward to the semi-finals, the top team playing the team with the second-highest number of points in the other. Where teams finished with equal points totals, first number of games won and secondly run rate was used to separate them.

1979 ICC Trophy

The 1979 ICC Trophy was a limited overs cricket tournament held in England between 22 May and 21 June 1979. It was the first ICC Trophy tournament to be staged, with matches between the 15 participating teams played over 60 overs a side and with white clothing and red balls. All matches were played in the Midlands.

The two finalists, Sri Lanka and Canada, qualified to take part in the 1979 World Cup. which began on 9 June, just three days after the ICC Trophy semi-finals. The ICC Trophy final was held on 21 June at Worcestershire's ground at New Road, two days before the World Cup final.

East Africa who played in the first World Cup didn't qualify this time, which meant there would be no nation from the African region participating in the 1979 World Cup.

Competition format

The 15 teams were divided into three groups of five. Each team played each other team in its group once in matches played between 22 May and 4 June, scoring four points for a win and two for a no-result (match started but not finished) or abandoned entirely without a ball being bowled. The three group winners and the team with the fourth-highest points total after the group stage went forward to the semi-finals, the top team playing the fourth-ranked side and the team with the second-highest number of points playing the third. Where teams finished with equal points totals, run rate was used to separate them.

1997 ICC Trophy

The Carlsberg 1997 ICC Trophy was a cricket tournament played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia between 24 March and 13 April 1997. It was the qualification tournament for the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh were the winners of the tournament, defeating Kenya in the final, while Scotland won the third place play-off. These three teams took the three available spots in the World Cup, Bangladesh and Scotland both qualifying for this tournament for the first time.

First round

The first round took the form of a group stage, with four groups, two of six teams and two of five teams. The top two teams from each group went through to the second round, whilst the remaining 14 teams took part in play-offs for the final standings.

1. Total points
2. Head-to-head result (if more than two teams level, head-to-head only applies if all those teams have played the same number of matches against each other)
3. Net run rate

Second round

The second round was also a group stage, this time with two groups of four. The top two teams went through to the semi final stage, whilst the third placed teams played off for fifth place, and the fourth placed teams played off for 7th place.

2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier

The 2014 ICC World Cup Qualifier was a cricket tournament to decide the final qualification for the 2015 World Cup. The top two teams qualified for the World Cup joining Ireland and Afghanistan who have already qualified through the 2011–13 ICC World Cricket League Championship and maintained their ODI status. The World Cup Qualifier was the final event of the 2009–14 World Cricket League. It was staged in New Zealand, from 13 January to 1 February 2014 after Scotland relinquished the right to host it.

The tournament saw Scotland qualifying for their 3rd World Cup and retaining their ODI status and UAE qualifying for their second world cup and gaining ODI status. Despite not qualifying for the World Cup, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea gained ODI status for the first time by finishing the tournament in 3rd and 4th places respectively.

The tournament also saw leading associate countries the Netherlands, Kenya and Canada fail to qualify for the World Cup and lose their ODI status till 2018, although the Netherlands did qualify for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 instead of Scotland.
