The 1973 European Super Cup was played between 1972–73 European Cup winners Ajax and 1972–73 European Cup Winners' Cup winners Milan, with Ajax winning 6–1 on aggregate, making it the worst defeat for an Italian team in an UEFA competition final. Unlike future Super Cup matches, the 1973 edition took place at the start of the following calendar year rather than the start of the following season.
The 1992 UEFA Super Cup was played between FC Barcelona and Werder Bremen, with Barcelona winning 3–2 on aggregate.
The 1975 European Super Cup Finals was played on September 9, 1975 and October 6, 1975 between FC Bayern Munich of West Germany and FC Dynamo Kyiv of USSR. Dynamo won 3-0 on aggregate.

The 1980 UEFA Super Cup was played between Valencia CF and Nottingham Forest, with Valencia winning on the away goals rule. Forest won the home leg 2-1, with both goals coming from Ian Bowyer. They however lost the second leg 1-0. This was the only occasion that the Super Cup was won using the away goals rule.
