1000 Miles Away

"1000 Miles Away" is a single by Australian rock group Hoodoo Gurus that was written by Dave Faulkner. It was released by RCA Records in June, 1991 and reached #33 on the Australian singles chart;

The crew of Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Canberra had an association with the song after they adopted it as their 'anthem'. Hoodoo Gurus played a concert including the Replenishment At Sea song "1000 Miles Away" on-board during their last voyage out of Fremantle to Fleet Base West, prior to its decommissioning in 2005.

The single was also released as a limited edition picture disc, on which the B-side is not listed but titled as 4 symbolic drawings: an eye, a light bulb, a horseshoe, and a circle with a line through it (for back cover see below right, when read using the Rebus Principle this becomes "I Think You Know"). It was also released as a cassette single with free 'Kinky' Hoodoo Gurus magazine.

The B side "I Think You Know" was also written by Faulkner. The second B-side on the CD Maxi-single, "Stomp the Tumbarumba", was originally recorded by New Zealand musician, Johnny Devlin, in 1963. It featured an uncredited appearance by the Gibb brothers (Bee Gees) as backup singers and reached #5 on the Sydney singles charts and #5 on the Brisbane charts the year of its release.

74 Miles Away

74 Miles Away is a live album by jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley recorded in Hollywood, California in 1967 featuring performances by Adderley with Nat Adderley, Joe Zawinul, Victor Gaskin and Roy McCurdy.

Reception

The Allmusic review by Richard S. Ginell awarded the album 4 stars and states "This was a rare thing, a group that could grab the public's attention and gently lead them into more difficult idioms without pandering or condescension".

Goodbye Alice in Wonderland

Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is the sixth studio album by singer-songwriter Jewel, released on May 2, 2006, through Atlantic Records. The album marks a return to her musical roots after 0304, and trying to write an autobiographical album like she did with Pieces of You. The album was written in the form of a novel with each track representing a chapter. Although the first official single was "Again & Again", the title track "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" debuted a month earlier on her website as an Internet exclusive. The second single, "Good Day" was released to radio in late June 2006. The next single was "Stephenville, TX". A video for it can be seen on Yahoo! Launch.

The album made its debut at #8 on the Billboard 200, with sales of 82,000 copies its first week, and became Jewel's fifth top 10 album in the United States. However, after only 12 weeks the album slid out of the Billboard 200. The album reappeared one week later after heavy promotion on various talk shows. It had sold 377,000 copies in the U.S. as of June 2010. Jewel stated she had plans to re-release the album, but her record company would not let her. However, they did allow her to release two singles in 2007.

Origins and variants

In his Shanties from the Seven Seas Hugill says that this was originally a shore ballad sung by street singers in Ireland in the early nineteenth century. Later it became a popular music hall number.The Scottish Student's Song Book gives the author as "J. B. Geoghegan". This is Joseph Bryan Geoghegan (c. 1816 – 1889) who was manager of the Star and Museum Music Hall in Bolton, Lancashire

The song is numbered 1778 in the Roud Folk Song Index and it has been passed from singer to singer as a traditional shanty. The figure of "ten thousand miles" could well refer to the distance between England and Australia, and the separation of the lovers arise because the singer's lover has been transported. Several of the variant texts make this possibility more explicit. For example the lyrics sung by Jon Boden have the lines

1000 Miles is a song written by David Stenmarck and Niklas Jarl, and performed by H.E.A.T. at Melodifestivalen 2009. Participating in the third semifinal inside the Skellefteå Kraft Arena on 14 February 2009, the song reached the final, ending up 9th.

The single peaked at third position at the Swedish singles chart.

"1000 Miles" is the fourth single by Australian alternative metal, post-grunge band Grinspoon from their third studio album New Detention (June 2002). It was released on 18 August 2003 by Universal Music Australia, which reached the ARIA Singles Chart top 100.

The three other tracks on the single were recorded in early 2003 at the band's live performance at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, on their Panic Attack Tour. This release also includes a music video for the song, which is animated and was not broadcast on television, it features rednecks and has band member, Phil Jamieson, as a preacher endorsing alcohol.

The song was played on Triple J radio as an album track during the latter half of 2002 and reached No. 47 on the station's Hottest 100 for that year.
