‘Aql (Arabic: عقل, meaning "intellect"), is an Arabic language term used in Islamic philosophy or theology for the intellect or the rational faculty of the soul or mind. It is the normal translation of the Greek term nous. In jurisprudence, it is associated with using reason as a source for sharia "religious law" and has been translated as "dialectical reasoning".
While predominantly expounded by Shī‘ī and Sufi thinkers, some Sunni Muslims such as Barelvis share similar beliefs.
In Shī‘ī jurisprudence, ‘aql is the process of using intellect or logic to deduce law. Legal scholars in both Sunni and Shī‘ī Islamic traditions share Quranic interpretation, the Sunnah, and Ijma‘ "consensus" as sources of Islamic law and judicial decisions (ḥukm). However, Twelvers of the Ja‘farī school of law utilize ‘aql whereas Sunnis use qiyas "analogical reasoning" as the fourth source of law.
Among Twelvers, Akhbārīs (associated with exotericism and traditionalism and theological schools in Qom) and Usulis (associated with esotericism and rationalism and theological schools in Baghdad) were contending subschools: the former reject ijtihād outright; the latter advocate ijtihad and have been predominant for the last 300 years.
Omega1 Aquilae (ω1 Aquilae, ω1 Aql) is the Bayer designation for a star in the equatorial constellation of Aquila. With an apparent visual magnitude of 5.2 it is a faint that that can be seen with the naked eye in dark skies. From the annual parallax shift of 7.86 mas, the distance to this star can be estimated as 410 light-years (130 parsecs), give or take a 20 light year margin of error.
The spectrum of this star fits a stellar classification of F0 IV. Typically, a luminosity class of IV means that the star is in the subgiant stage. It is rotating rapidly with a projected rotational velocity of 115 km/s. This is causing an equatorial bulge that is 5% larger than the polar radius.
10 Aquilae (abbreviated 10 Aql) is a star in the equatorial constellation of Aquila. 10 Aquilae is the Flamsteed designation. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 5.9 and thus is a faint star that is just visible to the naked eye in dark skies. The brightness of this star is diminished by 0.17 in visual magnitude from extinction caused by interstellar gas and dust. Based on an annual parallax shift of 13.45 mas, the distance to this star is around 240 light-years (74 parsecs).
The outer envelope of this star has an effective temperature of 8,659 K, giving it the yellow-white hued glow of an F-type star. It is a type of chemically peculiar star known as an Ap star, as indicated by the 'p' in the stellar classification. Because it is a pulsating variable star, it belongs to a sub-group known as rapidly oscillating Ap stars.
Altair (α Aquilae, α Aql) is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila and the twelfth brightest star in the night sky. It is currently in the G-cloud. Altair is an A-type main sequence star with an apparent visual magnitude of 0.77 and is one of the vertices of the Summer Triangle (the other two vertices are marked by Deneb and Vega). It is 16.7 light-years (5.13 parsecs) from Earth and is one of the closest stars visible to the naked eye.
Altair rotates rapidly, with a velocity at the equator of approximately 286 km/s. A study with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer revealed that Altair is not spherical, but is flattened at the poles due to its high rate of rotation. Other interferometric studies with multiple telescopes, operating in the infrared, have imaged and confirmed this phenomenon.
Altair is located 16.7 light-years (5.13 parsecs) from Earth and is one of the closest stars visible to the naked eye. Along with Beta Aquilae and Gamma Aquilae, it forms the well-known line of stars sometimes referred to as the Family of Aquila or Shaft of Aquila.
51 Aquilae (abbreviated 51 Aql) is a star in the equatorial constellation of Aquila. 51 Aquilae is its Flamsteed designation. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 5.39, which means it is faintly visible to the naked eye. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 35.88 mas, the distance to this star is around 90.9 light-years (27.9 parsecs).
This is an F-type main sequence star with a stellar classification of F5 V Fe-1 CH-0.7; where the 'Fe-1' and 'CH-0.7' represent abundance deficiencies of iron and the molecule CN, respectively. It is about 1.6 billion years old and is spinning relatively quickly with a projected rotational velocity of 77.5 km/s. The outer atmosphere has an effective temperature of 6,812 K, giving it the yellow-white hue characteristic of an F-type star.
Epsilon Aquilae (ε Aql, ε Aquilae) is the Bayer designation for a binary star in the equatorial constellation of Aquila. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 4.02 and is visible to the naked eye. Based upon an annual parallax of 21.05 mas, Epsilon Aquilae lies at a distance of approximately 155 light-years (48 parsecs) from Earth. This is a spectroscopic binary system. The pair orbit each other over a period of 1,271 days (3.5 years) with an eccentricity of 0.27.
It has the traditional name Deneb el Okab, from an Arabic term ذنب العقاب ðanab al-cuqāb meaning "the tail of the eagle", and the Mandarin names Woo and Yuë, derived from and represent the state Wu (吳), an old state was located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, and Yue (越), an old state in Zhejiang province (together with 19 Capricorni in Twelve States asterism). According to the R.H. Allen's works, it shares names with ζ Aquilae. Epsilon Aquilae is more precisely called Deneb el Okab Borealis, because is situated to the north of Zeta Aquilae, which can therefore be called Deneb el Okab Australis.
