Self-Defense in Deep Blue Maryland

The only thing that is surprising is the attitude of the Professional Journalist, though maybe I am reading something into it. Man Shot by Homeowner After Reported Breaking and Entering Attempt in Charles County, Police Investigating - Southern Maryland News Net

911 callers reported an male was attempting to break into the residence when the one of the homeowners shot the suspect. The 911 caller stated the firearm was secured, with the suspect outside of the residence being rendered medical attention by the homeowner and a neighbor.

Cops arrived, and then the emergency medical team arrived. The guy who got shot was airlifted to a trauma center.

Nanjemoy, Maryland is about a 42 mile drive south of Washington, DC.

As for the Professional Journalist, given that we are talking about Maryland, I suppose this isn't too far out in left field.

The firearm used, a Sig Sauer .45, was secured by police and found to be registered and owned by the homeowner.

The incident remains under investigation by police, no known charges have been filed as of Sunday, Jun 29th, 2025.

To me, that sounds as if the reporter is shocked that someone can be shot, and the police don't arrest the shooter. The very existence of justified self-defense is a concept never considered. Though that might just be me, reading something of my feelings about Professional Journalists into the mix.

Self-defense is a human right, and even in Deep Blue Maryland, it might be your legal right.

Self-Defense Is Legal in Maryland

You can never be sure how prosecutors will see things. No Charges Filed After Maryland Man Killed By Father During Home Invasion Attempt: Prosecutor | Aberdeen Daily Voice

My parents and I didn't always get along, but we worked out most of our issues by the time I was 30. This is a new level of insanity, even for me, and I read news articles about some fairly messed-up situations.

Investigators say that state police troopers were called at around 2 p.m. to check on a reported shooting at a home in the 200 block of Mount Zoar Road, where they found Berry outside suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

According to police, they also found Berry's 80-year-old father at the scene, who declined medical treatment, and a 78-year-old woman believed to be his mother, who had to be taken by ambulance to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not from gunfire.

It took a while for the DA to decide that this was justified, even if you consider that nothing much gets done between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Could it be that a Maryland DA really hates self-defense? Could be, but that would only be a guess.

"After a review of the current statute, case law, and all information gathered by Maryland State Police, the Office of the State's Attorney has elected to not proceed with criminal charges," officials said.

Self-defense is a human right.

Don't Bring a Hammer to a Gunfight

Also, don't engage in road rage, it never ends well. Man Shot Multiple Times Dead in Glen Burnie

Crazy drivers in cars versus people on motorcycles also isn't a good combination.

Glen Burnie, Maryland is a suburb of Baltimore, being about 10 miles south of downtown.

Initial findings suggest the young man was on a motorcycle when a vehicle drove erratically behind him. The vehicle driver allegedly approached the motorcyclist with a hammer, prompting the 22-year-old to use a handgun in self-defense.

A hammer can certainly be a deadly weapon. A person approaching me in a threatening manner with a hammer would be considered an imminent threat of death or grave bodliy harm.

The 22 year old has a valid concealed carry license, and is cooperating with the investigation.

Self-defense is a human right, and it might have saved this young man's life.

Liberal, Wealthy Enclave Wastes Close to $200 Million on Electric Buses

Michael Schwarz at The Gateway Pundit brings us a story of Virtue Signalling Gone awry. School District Turns to Diesel After Attempt to Convert Bus Fleet to Electric Proves Disastrous

Montgomery County, Maryland is listed as the 3rd-wealthiest county in Maryland. Sixty percent of the vote in 2020 went to President Biden. Limousine Liberals, in other words.

In 2021 the school district in Montgomery County signs a contract to replace 326 diesel school buses with electric school buses. They agreed to spend $168,684,990.

Alas, [Megan Limarzi, Inspector General of Montgomery County, Maryland] found that the electric bus contractor “did not deliver any of the buses expected in FY2022 through FY2024 by August 1st as required by the agreement’s delivery schedule.”

Nor will the contractor meet said delivery goal for the 2024-25 school year.

Because of the non-delivery of the busses, or non-completion of the terms of the contract, the school board should have assessed penalty fees. But they didn't do that, presumably because they are all about signalling virtue, and not about fiscal responsibility.

Furthermore, MCPS ignored the electric buses’ chronic mechanical failures.

“Mechanical and/or charging infrastructure issues resulted in buses not being able to run routes on more than 280 instances from February 10, 2022, through March 31, 2024,” Limarzi wrote.

So the touted, "electric vehicles are more reliable" scam continues.

Meanwhile, MCPS has spent another $14,749,919 on 90 diesel buses to cover the shortfall. Thus, in light of the original purchase, the total cost to taxpayers has approached $200 million.

The school board didn't hold the bus company accountable for non-delivery of busses. They ignored the mechanical problems with the busses, and just spent more money to cover up the problems, by buying more diesel busses.

Meanwhile, taxpayers must pay their taxes — at the point of a gun if necessary. That is tragicomic liberalism on parade.

Life in a liberal enclave has very little to do with reality, especially when that enclave is as wealthy as Montgomery County.

Could Self Defense Be Legal in Maryland?

It would seem to be the case. Gwynn Oak Homeowner Facing No Charges After Shooting Home Invader

The authorities are not releasing many details, but they say a burglary/home invasion appears to be related to a domestic situation. The person doing the breaking in was shot by the homeowner.

Following investigations, authorities established that the shooting resulted from an attempted burglary at the residence on Talbott St. Charges are forthcoming against the burglary suspect, who was shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

You can never be sure if self defense is legal in the very blue states, and even less so in the blue cities. Gwynn Oak a part of Baltimore. I don't know much except that Baltimore is a blue city, and probably has a liberal DA. It isn't a city I track.

Self defense is a human right. Good Guys 1, Bad Guys 0.

Another Failure of the Victim-selection Process

Maybe he thought Maryland was too Deep Blue to have armed homeowners. Homeowner fatally shoots man trying to break into his house, Maryland police say

Police learned the man was armed and believe he was attempting to break into the house, authorities said.

The homeowner fired his gun and shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Towson, Maryland is roughly 15 miles north of Baltimore. It is inside Baltimore's I-695 beltway. It is actually an unincorporated part of the county.

The investigation is ongoing, and the media had to make a statement about charging the homeowner. Maryland is a blue state, and even in Red states professional journalists hate the very idea of self-defense.

Red Herrings in Headlines

This "news outlet" mentions the fact that he was a firefighter multiple times. It is beside the point. Self defense, gun law debate intensifies after firefighter death | wusa9

He was engaged in a 'domestic violence attack' (alleged). The woman in question ran from him at 3:30 in the morning toward a man walking his dog. This 'firefighter' threatened the man who was a concealed carry licensee. That was a mistake.

“According to witnesses, Braxton approached and threatened to harm the man,” authorities said in a written statement. “The man, who has a permit to carry a firearm, produced a gun and shot Braxton."

The soon-to-be-dead guy wasn't engaged in fighting a fire; he was threatening a bystander who happened to get between himself and the woman he was assaulting (allegedly). His day job is as beside the point as his favorite brand of soup.

If this had taken place in Florida, people would be cheering the defender, and the sheriff, depending on the county, would probably offer some words about how it was a good thing this law-abiding citizen was there to protect that woman, and that bad guys need to take note that the good guys are armed. But this took place in Maryland, and I'm sure that the DA HATES self-defense, because (in your best Gretta voice) How Dare You not rely on the state for everything.

To me, it seems pretty a straight forward case of self-defense, which is a human right, but then I don't live in Maryland.

DA's HATE Self-defense - Maryland Edition

Are we shocked that they hate self-defense? FBI agent that shot man on a Red Line Metrorail train found not guilty of attempted murder - Washington Times

Mr. Valdivia, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, got into a verbal altercation with fellow passenger Steven Slaughter on Dec. 15, 2020, as Mr. Valdivia headed home from work on a Red Line train, near the Medical Center station at the time of the shooting.

Mr. Slaughter, a panhandler, exchanged words with Mr. Valdivia, which fueled the confrontation. Mr. Valdivia shot Mr. Slaughter twice, once in the arm and once in the abdomen. Mr. Slaughter survived the shooting.

The DA was upset because the miscreant didn't physically assault the FBI agent before the shooting. Of course that isn't a requirement for self-defense in most parts of the country, but we are talking about a blue city, so they charged the FBI agent with attempted murder. Of course if he really wanted to kill the guy accosting him, he had 13 more bullets in his sidearm.

The prosecution tried to paint him as a panhandler, but he is a violent person well known to law enforcement.

A Metro Transit Police officer told the jury that the man was well known to police and had a propensity for violence.

I can't find any report of how long it took the jury to deliberate, but the prosecution made its closing arguments on Friday, morning, and the verdict was sometime on Friday before 3:35 PM.

Mr. Valdivia was suspended without pay after the December, 2020 incident. It isn't clear if he will be reinstated. (The process is the punishment.)

Self-defense is a human-right, and it may be your legal right in Maryland, though not if the prosecuting attorneys have their way.

Don't Bring a Pizza Paddle to a Knife Fight?

That is a post title I NEVER expected to type. Papa John’s worker attacked over missing pepperoncinis stabs customer, MD cops say.

And who puts pepperocini on pizza? As a side, certainly. As a topping... Just no.

And to be fair, while the headline talks about toppings, pepprocini and garlic sauce are usually provided as sides to pizza. It has been a long time since I gave up gluten, but if memory serves, Papa Johns included both of those items with every pizza.

It happened late Aug. 17 when Herbert Harris, 40, returned to the restaurant with a pizza he had recently purchased to complain about missing pepperoncinis and garlic sauce, according to a statement from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

He started an argument, then started chasing an employee, grabbed a metal pizza paddle (the real name for which is pizza peel), and got stabbed for his trouble.

After being chased, the employee grabbed a pizza spear and stabbed Harris in the stomach in an act of self-defense, investigators say.

And for the record, I have no idea what a pizza spear is. Some of the articles say it was another peel. (Pizza paddles at ten paces?) Whatevah.

Anyway, cops showed up and hauled him to the local hospital. He is facing assault charges.

If you really cannot live without pepperocini (those pickled peppers you find on salad bars - and apparently in Papa John's Pizza orders), you can buy them. I buy mine from That Pickle Guy in Illinois. I get no money from recommending that, but he has good stuff. The olive muffalata is particularly delicious. (Shipping is not free or cheap, unless you buy substantial quantities, which I do.) I'm sure you can find a more generic version in your local store near the olives. I'm not an expert on garlic sauce, but I'm guessing you can either buy it, or that there are recipes on the internet.

The moral of the story is, for self-defense use the weapon that is available. Also, don't go to jail over garlic sause.

Good Guys 4, Bad Guys 0

They suffered a breakdown of the victim-selection process. They probably thought that robbing old people would be easy. Maryland armed robbery victim allegedly shot teenage attacker in self-defense, authorities say | Fox News

Oh and legal concealed carry might have just put a stop to a crime spree.

Four armed suspects went to a senior center, and selected potential victims.

Once they approached the victim in question and demanded his personal belongings, however, their plan backfired. The victim discharged his registered weapon in what police believe to be self-defense, striking one 17-year-old robbery suspect.

Police arrested a 15-year-old and the injured 17-year-old fairly quickly. They were armed when arrested.

Police were able to identify the stolen vehicle they were using, and arrested a 16-year-old and another 17-year-old driving the vehicle.

The 16-year-old and two 17-year-old suspects are being charged as adults, and the 15-year-old is being charged as a juvenile.

Police are investigating whether the incident is related to other similar robberies and carjackings in the region.

What were you doing at 15 or 17 years of age? I'm guessing that it didn't include armed robbery.

Self-defense is a human-right.

Self-defense is Legal in Maryland

You can never be sure. Jury rules Howard County man fatally shot his son in self-defense in 2019, finds him not guilty of manslaughter

Police said the elder Tucker shot his son following a domestic dispute in Marriottsville, and he was eventually indicted by a grand jury on charges of manslaughter and using a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

According to Tucker’s defense attorney, Andrew Jezic, the younger Tucker had previously threatened to kill himself and his wife earlier that day and was threatening a friend over the phone on his father’s front porch before the fatal encounter. Police had said previously that the fatal dispute occurred after the son had injured another unnamed family member at a different residence.

The say that the indictment was the result of a grand jury, but the prosecutors control those fairly closely.

Howard County State’s Attorney Rich Gibson defended proceeding with the case, writing in a statement that Tucker had been indicted by a grand jury and “it is our job to prosecute.”

Well, and prosecutors HATE self-defense.

Just because something is a tragedy, does not make it a crime.

How Would You Respond to a Home Invader?

It is Maryland, so the reporters seem confused. Man shoots, kills alleged intruder who broke into his Montgomery County home, police say

A Public Information Officer with Montgomery County Police Department told WUSA9 that the homeowner told them he heard sounds in his home and went to investigate. They said the homeowner was on the phone with dispatchers when several rounds were heard fired through the phone.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found an adult man dead inside one of the rooms in the home.

Officers took the homeowner in for questioning as part of the investigation. Which I find odd, but it is Maryland and not Texas.

A Homeowner Who Was Forced to Defend Himself Speaks Out

This was an incident that happened 2 years ago. Howard County homeowner who shot suspected intruder speaks out

A guy was at a friend's home. He went for a walk. When he returned he went to the wrong house. He broke in, and was shot.

Before he got shot there were threats and profanity. The homeowner kept telling him "you're in the wrong place." Didn't matter.

The autopsy showed his blood alcohol level was 3-times the legal amount to drive.

Dorsey said what he finds bothersome is the public debate and narrative that concluded he and his wife "weren't compassionate or should have shown more compassion with the whole situation."

Because the media has to find some way to vilify gun-owners. Guns and the people who own them must be bad. It is the narrative. They should just have let some belligerent stranger break into their home. Right.

Apparently they never questioned why the guy felt justified in breaking in. Because he was a "victim." Or something.

As I said at the time, alcohol really can be hazardous to your health; it makes you do stupid sh*t.

Dorsey said if he were to find himself in a similar situation, there could be a similar response.

Here is a link to my brief post from when this happened. It contains the threats.

And this second link is when the DA decided that it was self-defense. It contains the info on blood alcohol levels

People You Know Can Be a Threat

The Gun-hating community loves to go on about how if you own a gun, you are more likely to shoot someone you know than a complete stranger. That's because people you know, are more likely to be a threat. Homeowner kills alleged intruder in Montgomery County, police say

Police say the homeowner called for help, believing an intruder was trying to break into his home. When the intruder made it inside, the homeowner allegedly shot and killed the suspected intruder. No charges have been filed against the homeowner at this time.

This was not a perfect stranger trying to break in. This was someone known to the homeowner. They haven't given any more details.

People you know are not just your friends. "People you know" includes your violent ex-boyfriend, the feuding neighbor, the stalker you picked up at your last job, etc. They are all more likely to pose a threat than a complete stranger.

Somehow all of that is lost in the statistics. At least for the gun-controllers.

In the meantime, it looks like self-defense is legal in Maryland. And it is a human-right.

27 October 2020

Self-defense is Legal in Maryland

And Prosecutors HATE that. Jury acquits Pasadena man of murder, says he acted in self-defense on his property

A guy you know is drunk, disgruntled because you fired him, and he has been making threats.

Prosecutors said the homeowner was too quick to open fire on Jeffrey Dickinson. Gregory Korwek’s defense attorneys said the 44-year-old left him no choice.

Because we can't have people exercising individual responsiblity. Especially not in the People's Republic of California. Where will it end?

The 12 jurors decided Korwek was justified to use deadly force and that the homicide did not amount to second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter. Murder requires an intent to kill. O’Neill maintained Korwek had none.

The DA then issued some bullshit statement, to try and cover up the fact that this shouldn't have been brought to trial in the first place. In Texas, or Oklahoma, the cops would have bought this guy a coffee. Or something stronger.

Self-defense is a Human-right, and it might even be your legal right, but not if the DAs have anything to say about it.

She Gave Him the Money, Then He Shot Her

The Left always says just give them what they want, and you will be safe. This guy didn't get that memo. Suspect in Maryland 7-Eleven Slaying Apprehended, Officials Say

After the robber got the money, he shot Maher and then fled, authorities said.

There may be some Justice in this case, because he has been apprehended, but I predict he will plead to a lesser charge, and not spend very long in prison.

Gregory DeShawn Collins Jr., 22, of Waldorf, was located and apprehended in Georgia Monday

Maybe it is too high a profile of a case for the DA to do that, but then again, I am fairly cynical when it comes to the Criminal Justice System.

Cooperation is a strategy for dealing with a violent encounter. I don't think it is a particularly effective strategy.

But then a gun may not have saved this woman. There are no guarantees in this life save for death and next winter's snow. But just giving them what they want (the Left hates it when you bring up Rape in that context) doesn't work either.
