Note: Albania has been inhabited by Illyrians (ancient Indo-Europeans) from 1000 BCE. The south was colonized by Greece, and the north ruled by local kings. It was part of the Roman province of Illyricum, after which it was ruled by Constantinople. In the 6th century CE, Visigoths, Huns, and Slavs invaded it. From the 14th century until 1912, it was ruled by the Ottoman Empire. The official language is Albanian, which is derived from the ancient Illyrian language. |
