It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to so many release date changes. With the WGA and actors’ strikes resolved and summer blockbusters rolling in, August is filled with both big-budget flicks and new indie releases.

Premiering Aug. 16 is “Alien: Romulus,” a reboot of the iconic horror franchise about a group of young scavengers who face an extraterrestrial threat on a deep space scrapping mission, starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux and Isabela Merced. Also on Friday, “Skincare” arrives in theaters, a thriller about a famed aesthetician whose business faces relentless sabotage after a boutique opens across the street, starring Elizabeth Banks, Lewis Pullman, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez. Two films getting limited releases this week are “Close to You,” a drama about a transgender man returning to his hometown for the first time in years, and “The Greatest Surf Movie in the Universe,” an animated comedy about a life-saving vaccine that completely wipes the world’s knowledge of surfing. Keep an eye out for “Blink Twice” and “The Crow” which both release next week.
