While the MPC can be considered an improvement on the past, it is not a suburban revolution. Quality of life for the average Australian, let alone those at the more disadvantaged end of the spectrum, is deteriorating. In the first decades of the 21st Century, Australians are facing the twin crises of housing affordability and climate change while fundamentally changing how they work in, and relate to, their local residential environment. Since renters will continue to comprise a significant proportion of new suburban developments, initiatives to protect renter security and reduce housing mobility will make renters more invested in their communities. The flexibility to work and run small businesses from home is already transforming people's relationships with their local community. The traditional single-use zoning scheme applied to suburban developments needs to change if we hope for vibrant neighbourhoods rather than dormitories. We can no longer ignore climate change in the name of commercial expediency. Communities without an adequate green canopy, houses without natural ventilation and passive solar orientation and the other structural necessities to build climate resilience means that communities designed to last for a hundred years will become uninhabitable.
