Havana on the Hudson: A Cuban Sculptor’s Big Bet on Union City
The Artful Reinvention of Adrián Fernández Milanés
The famed 19th-century William Ulmer Brewery is located within a multi-building historic district in the Bushwick. In 1872, the building was constructed as a brewery for pioneering German brewmaster, William Ulmer. Today, it is a quintessential example of pre-Prohibition brewery architecture, and it is one of the last remaining and best-maintained structures from an era in which Brooklyn was the brewery capital of the United States. DXA studio is currently working to restore the building to its former grandeur while converting it into housing.
On November 9, join Untapped New York Insiders for a members-only tour of William Ulmer Brewery, a historic brewery located in Bushwick. You will tour this quintessential example of pre-Prohibition brewery architecture with Jordan Rogove, co-founder of DXA studio. The event is free for Untapped New York Insiders (get your first month free with code JOINUS).
Tour the William Ulmer Brewery
During the tour, you will discover the historic architectural typologies that were typical of 19th-century New York breweries, including arched masonry spaces and tin ceilings. Later you will learn about the historic preservation and reuse process in terms of design and collaboration with historic preservation entities. Finally, you will see how historic buildings can be salvaged while answering changing city needs.
Since the building was designated an individual landmark by New York’s Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2010, William Ulmer Brewery has become a memorial to Brooklyn’s brewing past. Step inside the historic landmark with Untapped New York this November.
