Language teachers must, by law, warn students of the risks of reading Chomsky

In the last week of February, the online newspaper Noticias365.com reported that the Spanish Council of Ministers passed a new law requiring professors of philosophy, history, literature, and linguistics to warn their students of the “potential collateral risks of reading texts of certain authors”. The Royal Decree is the result of a student’s accusation that his moderate conservative views were offended by Noam Chomsky’s radical views bordering on anarchy. The Supreme Court ordered the professor to pay 3,249 € (US$ 3,565) as compensation to the student.

The challenge of complexity: An interview with Crispin Thurlow

by Kevin Martens Wong

“A professor colleague once accused me of looking for power in everything. As if there were places where power didn’t exist! Much of what we do at university—as researchers and as teachers—is showing people that life is complicated. Life is not tidy or easily organised. It’s both predictable and unpredictable, both patterned and completely idiosyncratic.”
Kevin Martens Wong speaks to Professor Crispin Thurlow of the University of Bern on power and the politics of language, the theatrics of pedagogy, and the liberatory classroom.
