This study aimed at the determination of the learning style preferences of the University of Nigeria preclinical medical students and the impact they have on their academic performance. Materials and Methods: The study involved 158 third-year medical students (102 males and 56 females). Each student completed the VARK questionnaire (Version 7) comprising 16 questions that identified four different learning style preferences, namely V – visual, A – aural, R – read–write, and K – kinesthetic. The academic performance of the students was obtained from the results of their second MBBS professional examination. Analysis of data was done using Statistical Package for the Social sciences (SPSS) version 21; the percentages and charts of distribution for each VARK...

Background: Radiological identification is important in clinical, surgical and forensic medicine ... more Background: Radiological identification is important in clinical, surgical and forensic medicine particularly in the absence of comparative deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) samples and fingerprints. Aim is to establish the morphometry of frontal sinus (FS), maxillary sinus (MS) and bizygomatic distance (BZD) and their relationship with age and gender in Igbos and Ogonis of Nigeria using computed tomography (CT). Methods: Head CT scans of 625 subjects (477 Igbos and 148 Ogonis) between 18 and 85 years, showing normal FS, MS and BZD, were measured using DICOM viewer software. The Igbos and Ogonis were 247 males and 230 females; 84 males and 64 females respectively. The height, width and depth of the sinuses, intermaxillary sinus distances (IMD) and BZD were measured in centimeters (cm). The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and difference between groups was obtained using one way ANOVA. P-value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Mean values for the ...

These are factors most often provoked by the unusually large curriculum, nature of the course, and the psychosocial impact of dissection. As a palliative measure, Anatomy Adventure, a board game on anatomy was designed to reduce some of these pressures, emphasize student centered and collaborative learning styles, and add fun to the process of learning while promoting understanding and retention of the subject. To assess these objectives, 95 out of over 150 medical and dental students who expressed willingness to be part of the study were recruited and divided into a Game group and a Non-game group. A pretest written examination was given to both groups, participants in the Game group were allowed to play the game for ten days, after which a post-test examination was also given. A 20-item questionnaire rated on ...

Racial Predisposition to Hypertension, obesity and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been ... more Racial Predisposition to Hypertension, obesity and other cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been the subject of some recent researches. The various anthropometric and obesity indicators and their relationship with blood pressure parameters in the Ibos of Nigeria were studied. Using the simple random design, 569 males and females Nigerians of Ibo ethnicity, ages 20 to 80 years were enrolled for this study. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP & DBP), body mass index (BMI), waist hip ratio (WHR), waist height ratio (WHTR), waist circumference (We), triceps, subscapular, calf and sum of three skin fold thicknesses (TSF, SSF, eSF,& STS respectively) and other anthropometric parameters were measured. The mean SBP for the study was 119.6 +/- 23 mmHg and DBP 79.8 +/- 13mmhg. Males showed higher mean values of 5mmHg in SBP and 3mmHg in DBP than the females. we was 3cm larger in the females than the males. BMI, WHTR, and STS were all larger in the females than in the males. The highest...

A total of 1818 chest radiographs of male and female normotensive and hypertensive Nigerians of age range 4-80 and 10-80 years respectively were used for this study. Ages of subjects were obtained and transverse aortic arch, chest and heart diameters were determined. Mean aortic arch diameter for the normotensive groups were noted to be 5.0 +/- 0.5cm, 4.5 +/- 0.4cm and 4.7 +/- 0.5cm for males, females and both sexes respectively while 5.9 +/- 0.9cm, 5.4 +/- 0.6cm and 5.6 +/- 0.8cm for males, females and both sexes respectively were noted in the hypertensive group. Mean values were also generated for the chest and heart diameters. The study reports a mean difference in the aortic arch, heart and cardiothoracic ratio of 15% between the two groups. Relationship between aortic arch and heart diameter was established and aortic arch diameter was noted to be signif...
