Virginia Pulcini is Full Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Torino, Italy (Department of Modern Languages, Literature and Culture). She has carried out research in several fields of English linguistics, namely English phonetics and phonology (from a sociolinguistic and an English-Italian contrastive perspective), English Language Teaching (phonological interference, pronunciation errors), conversation analysis, learner English, English-Italian language contact (Anglicisms), lexicology and lexicography (bilingual dictionaries and dictionary-making) and English-medium instruction. Her most recent co-edited volumes are The Anglicization of European Lexis, (with C. Furiassi and F. Rodríguez González, John Benjamins 2012) and Languaging in and across Communities: New Voices, New Identities, (with S. Campagna, E. Ochse and M. Solly, Peter Lang, 2016)

Languaging in Corporate Discourse

In the light of languaging meant as “a process of making meaning and shaping knowledge and experi... more In the light of languaging meant as “a process of making meaning and shaping knowledge and experience through language” (Swain 2006: 98) and following Cortese’ s approach according to which “the notion of ‘languaging’ holistically frames discursive practices as negotiations of individual epistemologies in which affective response has a large share” (2001: 200), this chapter aims to investigate the functions of evaluation and persuasion as they appear in corporate websites. These linguistic functions generate the interaction between companies and customers, so much so that corporate websites often promote themselves by describing their history and their experience, appealing to the prospective customers through the development of information and even technical knowledge. In other words, companies catch people’s attention by pivoting on their awareness and cognitive response. Following previous studies on the same topic (Salvi 2007, 2012, 2013), the present analysis concerns the websites of British electricity supply companies, namely the Big Six suppliers (British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Npower, Scottish Power, SSE). The recent EU regulation of the market in electricity requires a new negotiation between companies and consumers in relation to changed socio-economic and cultural factors. The focus is then on linguistic aspects of corporate communication (from vocabulary to pragmatic usage) which involve customers in active interactions based on specific goals and requirements. Languaging in this context contributes to the creation of new corporate identities and the understanding of social values in terms of fair competition, appropriate consumer protection, regularity and quality of service, price and environmental protection

This volume explores the lexical influence of English on European languages, a topical theme with... more This volume explores the lexical influence of English on European languages, a topical theme with linguistic and cultural implications. It provides an extensive introductory background to a cross-national view of English-induced lexical borrowing, posing crucial analytical questions such as what counts as an Anglicism. It also offers a typology of borrowings with examples from the languages represented: Armenian, Danish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Serbian, Spanish, and Swedish. The articles in this volume address general and language-specific issues related to the analysis and collection of Anglicisms, extending the scope to the largely unexplored area of phraseology and bringing new insights into corpus-based and corpus-driven methodologies. This volume fits into a well-established and constantly developing research field and will appeal to scholars interested in the spread of English as an international language, contact and contrastive linguistics, lexicology and lexicography, and computer corpus lexicography.

This is a trend aiming to give jobs an international appeal. While some job titles fill lexical gaps and are successfully integrated, others enter in competition with national equivalents, generating "multiple terminology" in the receiving languages. The aim of this paper is to identify the stylistic and pragmatic reasons which determine the success of an Anglicism in the receiving language, despite the existence of a domestic equivalent. This study aims at answering some crucial questions related to the use of corpora in loanword lex... more This study aims at answering some crucial questions related to the use of corpora in loanword lexicography and the status of a sample of newly recorded Anglicisms into Italian. Especially in the area of neology, dictionaries fail to provide information about currency (degree of assimilation) and representativeness (usage frequency) of the recorded entry words. To address this problem, the goal is to verify how corpus data can integrate lexicographic information and, in the case of the Italian language, establish which of the two corpora is more suitable to provide reliable frequency scores for the items under examination.
