On this basis, an early introduction to proper reading strategies shall develop good attitudes towards reading. Based on a study conducted by the Malaysia National Library in 2015, the rate of reading is lower among Malaysians, with only 15 to 20 books on average per year. Due to this, the researchers conducted a reading workshop, “Using Smartphone to Improve English Skills” in three districts in three different states. This qualitative study was embarked to explore the perception of workshop participants (pupils and parents) towards the reading workshop. Despite the pupils’ and parents’ perceptions towards the workshop which generally are positive, however, some suggestions are given to further improve the reading workshop. Teachers all over the world resorted to continue the teaching and learning process online using different online tools. In this study, the preferred online tools, and the relationship between the factors of TESL teachers’ use of online tools and their behavioural intention are investigated. A survey was conducted on 56 Malaysian TESL teachers using purposive sampling technique. The data were collected through online survey questionnaires assigned using Google Forms. The findings showed the top 3 major online tools used by TESL teachers were WhatsApp (80.4%), Google Form (71.4%), while Quizizz and YouTube both achieved a 62.5% among the 56 respondents. The use of internationally and locally published English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks is cru... more The use of internationally and locally published English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks is crucial to aiding in teaching and learning. However, choosing the right textbook or developing one has been known to be a challenging task. Various frameworks have, therefore, been proposed by different researchers to outline the criteria that should be taken into consideration in the process of developing, selecting, and evaluating ELT textbooks. These criteria would be the main focus of this study to improve language programmes in Malaysia. This study aims to determine the criteria that make a good ELT textbook based on the perception of seven ESL secondary school teachers in Malaysia. Face-to-face interviews have been administered to collect data, which are analysed through thematic analysis. The findings of this study have revealed eleven criteria that are deemed crucial for a good ELT textbook, which include Culture and Cultural Introduction. These eleven criteria should be taken into consideration for the selection and evaluation of ELT textbooks, as well as to develop or to supplement the existing frameworks, primarily in the teaching of English as a second language in Malaysia.

Evaluating a textbook is essential to ensure educational goals are met. In the present study, the Malaysian English Language Textbook Evaluation Checklist (MELTEC) is developed for the purpose of materials adaptation. The lack of validity and reliability of previous textbook evaluation checklists reported by researchers in the field of ELT textbook evaluation has resulted in the need to establish the validity and reliability of the checklist developed in this study using the Rasch Measurement Model (RRM). One hundred and ten ESL secondary school teachers from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, had participated in this study. Rasch analysis was used to examine the item fit, polarity, reliability, separation index, and unidimensionality of the checklist. As a result, the finalised version of MELTEC comprises of 78 items. Both the required knowledge and the skill set needed can be obtained from tertiary education at universities and higher institutions. However, it seems that graduates are lacking in that skill set, namely, soft skills. This paper is a systemic review on what soft skills employers value and yet are lacking among graduates and what are the roles of universities and the government pertaining to this issue. The findings have shown that the graduates are lacking soft skills that are highly valued by the employers. To overcome this issue,, universities and the government has a part to play in order to build and develop the nation’s human capital.

Teaching the literature component of the English language subject in Malaysian secondary schools ... more Teaching the literature component of the English language subject in Malaysian secondary schools has often been considered challenging. This study explores Malaysian ESL trainee teachers’ selection of approaches and activities in teaching literature, factors behind the selection and their confidence in teaching the component. Semi-structured interview questions were asked to five ESL trainee teachers. The findings showed that generally, (1) the trainees adopted a combination of approaches and (2) displayed a preference for student- centred activities. (3) Factors influencing the selection of approaches and activities were students’ proficiency and cultural background, availability of information communication technology (ICT) facilities, time, motivation and literary texts. (4) Generally, the trainees felt confident in teaching the new literature component. To sum up, the trainees had reasonable knowledge of basic approaches in teaching literature but further pedagogical training for teaching weak students and handling new literature components need to be strengthened in the future for teacher-training programmes. The study was conducted to fifteen students from a rural school in Padawan, Sarawak, Malaysia. The aims of this study is to find out students’ perception of using games in teaching of reading skill among stage two students, to find out the impact shown according to students’ gender and to investigate whether the usage of games really help the students in learning English Language. The methodologies incorporated in carrying out this study was qualitative which involves questionnaires. It is found that teacher will face some common problems in getting the right approach to teach reading skill as inculcate the reading interest.
