In 2020 energy hubs was just an idea. Fast forward 4 years and we have a demonstrable understanding on how energy hubs could play a pivotal role in the important brown to green energy transition. Without ambition, scale and collaboration we will build an inefficient future energy system. Bringing the energy hubproject and hydrogen backbone projects together it’s easy to realise the scale of ambition and more importantly, the scale of the opportunity. I was in the audience over a year ago to hear Keir Starmer unveil plans for the launch of a Scotland-based public energy company. At Labour conference this year, I listened to now Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirm Aberdeen as the headquarters of GB Energy. Aberdeen has been Europe’s energy capital for the last fifty years and with supportive energy policies in place to back firms and their workers, the city can and will spearhead the UK’s homegrown energy transition.   We have always argued that the path to a successful energy transition for Scotland and the wider UK is to leverage our existing industrial strengths; The decision to locate GB Energy in Aberdeen is a statement that the Government recognises that imperative. Where GB Energy is located is important but ultimately what really matters is what is does. Success will be built on partnerships with industry unlocking the private sector investment needed to achieve the homegrown energy transition and economic growth we all want. The priorities of the new organisation are to co-invest in new technologies like floating wind, scale and accelerate mature technologies to meet clean power timelines and to scale up municipal and community power projects. Public sector investment has an important role to play, but the lions share of the investment will come from the private sector. GB Energy must work to ensure that the UK is the global destination for energy investment. While the announcement on GB Energy is welcomed, I remain concerned the new government’s planned tax changes will have profound consequences for this sector and its people. We need the Government to deliver on commitments to safeguard jobs in our domestic oil and gas sector, and support the world class supply chain which relies on revenue from oil and gas activity to invest in our energy future.
